Tri Force Heroes 100% Completion

These would be the tasks for a full completion of the game:

  • Unlock all 36 Costumes
  • Collect 15 Friendly Tokens
  • Beat all 128 missions in both multi- and singleplayer

I'm not there yet, but made some significant milestones last day. I finally completed all 128 missions in multiplayer and I got all costumes except for the Dapper Spinner Kit, where you need ten Freebies. I'm not messing with the clock of my 3DS and I only have to get three more, so it's just a matter of a short time.

I collected 9 Friendly Tokens so far, which was possible thanks to my collection of Zelda themed Limited Edition Nintendo 3DS systems. I knew that they would come in handy with this game! You have to keep formatting a system, but this only takes a few minutes. I could collect the rest of the tokens just now, but later this year I will be at a Zelda fan meeting, where I will probably get the rest. It's not like you get anything important for having all 15 tokens, just some changes in dialog. By the way, with these Friendly Tokens this game has actual missables, because you can sell them. Sell more than 7 and you won't be able to get all costumes. They might fix this with an update, but just don't sell them. You shouldn't sell any materials at all to be honest, because the prizes are not worth it.

Anyway, one big task left would be completing all missions a second time in singleplayer. The board on the wall in the lobby keeps track individually what missions you've beaten in multiplayer and in singleplayer. With multiplayer I got the full board, now I still will have to go through all of it again in singleplayer. I don't mind this too much though, because it offers quite a different experience. And it's not as bad as I thought it would be, I already managed to beat all challenges in the Forest, even the first Time Trial, which seems to be the hardest in the game. Still, I'm hoping that Nintendo might improve the singleplayer in one of their updates for the game... real simple changes could make the experience much more pleasant. I especially miss the possibility to equip the doppels with outfits, it would be so awesome being able to create your perfect team.

On a site note, I also got a boxed copy of the game on Friday, which I have abused for farming materials in the arena. However, it didn't do me anything good, because it turned out that the materials, which I really wanted, are not available in the arena mode. There's like one rare material in each area, which you can only get as a rare prize in three later challenges. So, they are easy to miss. Mystery Jade, Rainbow Coral, Star Fragment, Ice Rose, Vibrant Brooch, Crystal Skull, Sanctuary Mask, Steel Mask - these are the ones. So, keep an eye out for them at the merchant. If he offers them, do not hesitate to buy them!

  1. Do you truly consider 100%ing all of the multiplayer challenges necessary? Personally, I consider only single player necessary, since some people don't have access to wifi and others simply don't like the idea of having to rely on other people that may not be as skilled to help them 100% their game for them.

  2. Well, that would be like saying that completing Four Swords isn't necessary for the 100% in A Link to the Past + Four Swords on GBA. You couldn't even play that without other people...

For 100% I count all permanent positive changes in the game, their nature is unimportant. On the walls in the lobbies it keeps track, which stages you've beaten in both multi- and singleplayer. Each of these little triangles there is a positive permanent change.

By the way, the update at least might ease the Friendship Token thing. :)

  3. Don't mind my asking, but who did you play with?

  4. Other people from ZeldaEurope mostly. We have a thread there, where we exchange Friend Codes. I did quite some challenges with randoms as well, it's not always bad.

  5. Also, sorry for the Necropost, but you can now play Four Swords with only yourself in the Four Swords Anniversary Edition, so that's completely unrelated.

  6. I know, but those are different versions and I completed both for 100%. Just check my blog under the Four Swords tag.

In the GBA version of A Link to the Past one side quest and one dungeon are not accessible without playing Four Swords. So, you really want to complete Four Swords here.

With the Anniversary Edition it's unimportant, whether you play alone or not. Both counts. Though you can't get any Medals of Courage without other people, but they are optional.

  7. I completed the Dungeon without using Four Swords, and the side quest, in my opinion, is not necessary, similar to my opinion on most multiplayer objectives in games.
I see we have different ideas of 100%ing in games. Do you consider all 50 medals from Gramps necessary as well, and the 16 Big Plays in Phantom Hourglass?

Also, what about, when years down the road, you can't do the Multiplayer challenges in TFH anymore, do you just consider it impossible to 100% the game?

  8. Well, 100% doesn't mean "anything that's convenient enough to do". 100% means everything. So, why shouldn't the 50 Medals or the 16 Big Plays count? They certainly do. In A Link Between Worlds even the Giant Cucco counts, which enraged me two years back. But there's nothing I can do other than accept that I will never achieve a true 100% in ALBW, because that minigame is just near impossible. I did get the 50 Medals though, was a lot of fun.

Also, you don't need an internet connection for Tri Force Heroes to complete it, you can still play the multiplayer locally. So, even if the servers are down, you can still get everything. This is already the case with the Big Plays in Phantom Hourglass, you will have to do it locally.

But 100% is 100%. Not 75%, not 95%, not 99%. If you're missing anything, you haven't completed the game. It doesn't matter, whether you can't do it or not. You're missing an entire sword technique in A Link the Past GBA, if you don't complete the Riddle Quest, so why shouldn't it count? :)

  9. Because it's unlocked through multiplayer means. Honestly, I truly don't feel like having to use other people to your advantage is really 100%ing a game. 100%ing a game truly relies on your skills and your strengths, not your friends or family, and certainly not some random person you just met online.

That said, I'll throw you a bone here and say that since TFH is a mainly multiplayer game, multiplayer challenges count. I understand you've gone through hell and back, but is there any chance you (and a friend) of yours would be willing to exclusively go through the time - and "transport the orb quickly!" challenges with me? It's fine if you can't, but I really hate the randoms I meet.

  10. The means don't matter, as long as it is done legally and not via cheating devices. And how is battling Shadow Links to get all the Medals (you don't even need other people for that) or aiming for Big Plays "using other people to your advantage"? You're competing here. And even with Four Swords you're heavily competing, because you want 10 of these Medals of Courage. For that you have to get the most Rupees in a level. And that requires your skills more than anything and completing ALttP+FS is something to be proud about.

But in any case, it doesn't matter. A game gives tasks and challenges to complete. Some you have to do alone, for others you have to play cooperatively or against other people. If you only want to play solo, that's fine. But don't act like you 100% completed a game without doing the multiplayer tasks, just because you can't or don't want to play multiplayer. That's not an excuse and you're bending the definition of "100%" for the sake of your own convenience. And 100% doesn't have anything to do with skill. It's about completion and it's about dedication. Some games are very easy to complete, some are nearly impossible.

About your question: I've already completed Tri Force Heroes and I won't have the time to play in the near future, sorry. Also, you wouldn't want to use other people to your advantage, right? ;)

  11. PS: The timed challenges are with the exception of the Deku Forest quite easy. I even did quite some of them with randoms. Just keep trying until you find a good group.

  12. Final question; do you consider getting 2000 points necessary for 100% in OoT in the Gerudo Archery minigame?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Not really. 100% is about unlockables and rewards, there is no reward for getting 2000 points. But I do it anyway, because it looks nice. I guess, this minigame is somewhat of a special case, since there is a clear maximum score. Most minigames don't have this, which is why I usually don't aim for minigame records, unless they yield a special reward.

For example getting 999 hits in the sword training minigames in The Wind Waker and Spirit Tracks earns you special titles with certain people, so that's something, which counts for 100%, even if it's just a small reward. I actually made a post about this a while ago:
