The rumor mill will keep spinning wildly until Friday, where Nintendo hopefully will put all cards on the table. However, there is one rumor that caught my attention about Koei Tecmo working on a new Warriors game based on a Nintendo-franchise other than Zelda.
While it would be better, if they exclusively focused on Hyrule Warriors, it does make sense in the current situation. Right now it's best to wait, until Breath of the Wild has been released, before they plan and start a potential sequel to Hyrule Warriors. That way they can use content from the new Zelda epoch to create a true sequel. We're talking Hyrule Warriors 2 here and hopefully not some Hyrule Warriors - Extreme Legends Edition or whatever, where they present us the same game a third time and just add ten more characters and five more Adventure Maps. No, thanks. For the Switch it needs a fully blown sequel and that needs time. And in the meantime Koei Tecmo might produce a different Warriors title for Nintendo, because they are
(I'm personally not interested in another Warriors game, save for maybe One Piece - Pirate Warriors, because you only really need one Warriors game in your life. Last time I've checked, my Nintendo 3DS recorded 666 hours on Legends, while I was above 700 hours on the Wii U Version. That's crazy and I love Hyrule Warriors, but I don't really need another game like this in my life.)
So, what could it be? Koei Tecmo has expressed interest in other Nintendo franchises in the past, including Pokémon, Mario and even Starfox (the latter even had a prototype, which was rejected by Nintendo, see here). But they all feel kind of "odd" as a choice for a Warriors game, because you'd want a battlefield scenario and a wide roster of characters. How would Super Mario fit in that? Also, Mario has more than enough spin-off games already, it doesn't also need a battle game. Pokémon would be weird as well, while it got the perfect spin-off collaboration with Pokémon Tournament / Pokken already.
The best (and most obvious / boring) choice would probably be Fire Emblem...
Fire Emblem might not be the most popular Nintendo franchise, but it can easily keep up with Dynasty Warriors in terms of sales and popularity. It's a good match.
It already comes with the perfect scenarios for such a battle focused game and it would really enrich the Fire Emblem franchise, where you normally get tactical RPGs with a turn-based battle system. This way you could now really get into the battle action with your favorite characters, where the franchise offers plenty of them for a wide cast, maybe even more than the Zelda franchise has to offer (but maybe not with the same level of variety).
Additionally, there seem to be many attractive female characters, where Koei Tecmo can do their usual magic...

I believe Star Fox Warriors was already shot down in an interview - I personally believe it'll be Emblem Warriors, with a teeny tiny chance of Mushroom Kingdom Warriors (still sounds goofy, but better than Mario Warriors..)
ReplyDeleteEmblem Warriors would have a way better opportunity of tying characters from different eras together using the Outrealm Gates instead of the Gate(s) of Souls like Hyrule Warriors did as well.
Yeah, there was a report about the rejected Starfox Warriors one month ago. I've added it to the post.
ReplyDeleteI haven't played any of the Fire Emblem games yet, but I'm growing more and more curious... and I certainly wouldn't mind a Fire Emblem Warriors game, though I probably wouldn't play it.
You guessed it!!
ReplyDeleteYeah, Fire Emblem confirmed! I'm even a little bit excited for this... :-D
ReplyDeleteIf we get a whole 'nother Fire Emblem Warriors after Three Hopes, I'd go w/ a new game w/ male villager named Leib (a masculine 1-syllable first name) as the main lead, the first playable character, the hero, AND the left-handed swordsman w/ his swords in his left hand, his shields in his right hand, and his scabbard on behind his left shoulder on his back fer left-handed draw (like Hyrule Warriors Link AND most Links). His main outfit could be like the green outfit in Hyrule Warriors, but w/ the rd scarf w/ lions on it. His story-related primary main weapon's gotta look just like Link's Master Sword (w/ the quillons turned to the blade, the one-handed ricasso, the hexagonal blade section, the straight edges, and the spear tip), but w/ the gold-plated hilt (w/ the gold-plated upswept quillons curved to the steel blade) AND the two symmetrical red gems on its guard (one on both sides). His shield's gotta have the same 4-pointed shape as the Hylian Shield, but w/ the lion theme. Lion's Claw & Lion's Protection could be perfect names. The deuteragonist's gotta be a female named Hilda (not the same Hilda in Three Houses). She's gotta be a villager like the male lead. They both gotta be 16-17 years old. The final boss's gotta be a giant who's a big dude at 9ft, 9 inches tall. He's gotta be named Melchior. Personally, I don't want any facial hair on the bad guy unless it's just sideburns, but maybe keep the long mane. The final boss fight's gotta be w/ the bad guy stabbed in his heart by the male lead (the MC) ta save the Earth from his malice AND keep the female lead (who's not the main lead) safe. They could have it end like Fire Emblem Warriors' story w/ the big bad guy put down, the world delivered from his evil, the main Fire Emblem heroes goin' back to their worlds, and the two leads goin' back home triumphant to take over as leaders, but maybe 20 long years after Fire Emblem Warriors. Maybe have an older Lianna AND older Rowan as supportin' roles (maybe 36-37 years old). The leads SHOULD be voiced be Sam Riegel (save VA as Stahl AND Donnel in Fire Emblem Awakenin') and Alexis Tipton (same VA as Lucina) in English. Sugiyama Noriaki (talkin' like a casual punkish Yankii without any formalities) AND Sakamoto Maaya in Japanese. The main male lead's gotta talk like a punk w/ slang, like, "I'm comin' through, yo!", "I'm totes ready!", "I'm yer dude!", "The hell's goin' on?", "I ain't cryin' quits yet!", "Ain't got all day!", AND "I ain't losin', dammit!" The female lead's gotta have the same hairstyle as Skyward Sword's Zelda, super powers w/ light (without tomes), AND a sword as her main weapon. The game won't need any DLC to have the full story. The game could have more costumes, more weapon designs named after mythical weapons (maybe have different designs w/ the same names), more playable heroes (not DLC), AND a new map w/ a new world that's like Hyrule (w/ a western desert in the west, a forest in the southeast, a village in the east, a castle in the heart, AND a fiery mountain in the northeast). Maybe a world called Camelot after Arthur's Camelot, or maybe Caliburn after the Sword in the Stone. Leib AND Hilda as the two leads' names could work. The two leads as villagers AND sword users could work, too.
ReplyDeleteWe could have more weapon designs, like Tizona (w/ the winged quillons curved to the blade, two red gems on the guard, AND the hexagonal blade section), Colada (w/ the diamond blade section), Durendal (w/ the hexagonal blade section), Monoshizao (a big sword), Kusanagi (a two-edged sword), Tokijin (a two-edged sword design from Inuyasha), So'unga ('nother two-edged sword from Inuyasha), Maurice's Sword, Curtana, Joyeuse, Galatine, Caliburn, AND Excalibur (the sword, not the tome w/ the name).
