Ocarina of Time Remake: New Item Revealed

inventory screen as seen in the gameplay by Aonuma last month

The gameplay from Aonuma last month has shown us the items and equipment screens, where it became clear that the remake will eventually come with some new items. Now, with all the previews out there, some of these gaps have been filled. Don't read more if you want to avoid spoilers.

If you watch the preview by Nintendo Life, then you will learn that the game has now Business Scrub Seeds. With this new item you can summon Business Scrubs anywhere to buy Red Potions, Green Potions, Bombs or Deku Nuts. It's what goes into the slot right next to the Deku Nuts:

Well, it's not exactly the most exciting addition. The game never has been so difficult that you would need to restock on things from outside of dungeons. Farore's Wind has been mostly useless as well for the same reason. But at least this fits the game's set of plant-based items very well and therefore feels like a very natural addition.

The item slot in the bottom right is just the amiibo functionality, where this is done in a similar way to Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. The overview trailer made it clear that only the upcoming two new amiibo will give you special masks, while all the existing Zelda amiibo will only summon consumable items, like Bombs or Deku Sticks. Again, this isn't really exciting, nor is it in any way needed, because you can just cut some grass to get the same things.

The additional Empty Bottle can be obtained very early in the game. In fact, it will likely become the first bottle most players find, because you get this from the owner of the Magic Shop in Hyrule Castle Town. He asks you to collect a bug for him that has escaped, which is just one of the game's regular bugs.

We still haven't seen what goes into the square slot, but it's likely the trading items. It's empty in the previews, because you've handed over Zelda's Letter and haven't started the second trading sequence as an adult yet. Also, there is some footage by Iconoclaste where we can see the collection screen and the trading items are not there:

Piece of Heart: by colleting this kind of partial Heart Container, you can earn yourself more hearts—one for every four pieces.

It's nice that the Fairy Ocarina remains in your inventory, since this was a gift from Saria. Maybe you can even still use it after having obtained the Ocarina of Time, though then this should have been part of the equipment screen. But it eliminates this joke of how Link just throws it away after finding a better one.

Interestingly, there now goes a lot more into this collection screen. We have an icon for the magic Spin Attack, which you obtain from the Great Fairy of Power at Death Mountain. Maybe the two icons below will be for the doubled magic meter and defense. I always like it when these otherwise invisible upgrades get a representation somehow in the menus, so that you can see that you've collected everything in the game in one place.

It also looks like there is a new a bag for the Business Scrub Seeds. Maybe you need to find one for the latter first, before you can use them, where this needs to be given to you by a Business Scrub. But this isn't exactly something in need of capacity upgrades, while everything else seen in this column had two.

However, the open spot below the the Bomb Bag might be a Bombchu Bag, like in Phantom Hourglass. The Bombchus had a fixed capacity of 50 in the original, but maybe this will now be similar to the Bomb Bag. Sadly, the capacity for holding Deku Sticks and Nuts doesn't seem to be reflected in any way on this screen.

One mystery that remains is the hexagonal slot on the equipment screen. The one thing that's unaccounted is the Stone/Shard of Agony, but it's not exactly something that will be needed in the remake, because the entrances to the secret grottoes are now much more prominent. You can clearly see where you need to lay a bomb, while there are new ones with a propeller plant on top:

a round spot of dirt with a propeller plant-shaped plant on top

This is from Zeltik's footage and he speculates that you need the new Business Scrub Seeds to open this, but we already know that's not the case. I think this is simply indicating that you need to play the Song of Storms.

The original game had two types of grotto entrances. One needed bombs to open and the other the Song of Storms. But you wouldn't know which one to use until you've tried, so the Stone of Agony (or some player's guide book) was pivotal in locating these. Maybe it will act more like the Sheikah Sensor in the remake, so you will be able to locate the grottoes from a greater distance. Or maybe they will replace it with something to guide you towards Gold Skulltulas, like the Seashell Sensor in Link's Awakening, but these spiders are already drawing their attention to you via noise.

In any case, it's probably an item that you simply want to turn off, because you find its beeping annoying or because you don't want the help. And this is why it's on the equipment screen.
