Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition – Exclusive My Fairy Items Confirmed

The latest Famitsu magazine shows off some of the exclusive My Fairy items, which were only available via promo gift codes in certain regions for Hyrule Warriors: Legends.

For starters, there's the Red Royal Set:

And if you look closely, you can even spot the black Ghirahim outfit, as well as the white Midna dress in the list of trousers / skirts to the left. All of these were previously exclusive items. The Classic Set, as well as the Classic Costume for Link should probably be in the game as well.

This shouldn't be much of a surprise, but it's nice to finally have the confirmation. But I still think that it would have been a good idea to offer all items for Hyrule Warriors: Legends via My Nintendo. And I still think that the fairies look atrocious in 3D...

Anyway, so far it seems like everything is in the "Definitive Edition", except for the 8-Bit weapons. But if this version wants to stay true to its name, then it should have them as well.

Hyrule Warriors Legends: Got All Medals

After all this time I've finally completed Hyrule Warriors - Legends on the Nintendo 3DS by getting all Medals. Well, I did the majority of tasks back in 2015, when the game and its DLC was released. The biggest task was getting A-ranks in the entirety of Adventure Mode, which took hundreds of hours. Afterwards I only had three Medals open:

  • The Real Deal
  • Circle of Friends
  • Hero of Hyrule

The last one was gotten automatically from getting all other medals. For the "Circle of Friends" you need to trade Rental Skills in the My Fairy feature for a total of 50 times, which might be the most troublesome one, if you can't find anyone with the game, since you have to do this locally. I got this one last year in August at a Zelda fan meeting, where one participant was nice enough to bring the game with him to help me with this. Took about 20 minutes to do the 50 trades.

So, the final task for me was completing Legend Mode on "Hero" difficulty for "The Real Deal" Medal. I saved this one for last, because originally I had the ambition to level all 29 characters to MAX, as well as create at least one "perfect" weapon for everyone. Those would be level 4+ weapons or level 4 for DLC characters, have five stars and eight slots, filled with "good" weapon skills, including Legendary (not really useful, but the max damage makes the weapon look more complete), Heart Power and two fitting AUG skills...

Well, so far I only did this for my three favorite ingame ladies:

With the Hyrule Warriors - Definitive Edition on the horizon, I'm not really willing to do this for everyone anymore, since I would have to start over anyway, if I ever get the new version. So, I simply decided to take the three 255 level beauties and complete Hero Mode with them. I also had some other characters with perfect weapons and level above 200, including Marin and Toon Zelda, who joined the task occasionally as well. But I mostly used Cia, Twili Midna and Zelda.

And my motivation was still quite low. After the announcement of the Definitive Edition I wanted to be done with this, but I had to drag myself through the entirety of Legend Mode and its 32 scenarios one more time, which wasn't as much fun as it used to be. I've spent over 700 hours on both versions of the game and I'm probably burnt-out on it...

Now, to truly complete the game for 100%, I also would have to level every character to 255/MAX, which takes a small eternity. Since now I'm done with "Hero Mode", it would be a lot of grinding for nothing. And with the Hyrule Warriors - Definitive Edition in sight, it's even a less appealing task, because the 3DS version just looks so much more inferior now. So, I probably just settle for having all Medals.

With the Wii U version I most likely won't even go that far. I've completed Legend Mode on "Hero" difficulty there already, but I still need to A-rank the Cucco's Fury Mode, which would result in by far the most painful grinding in the entire game. If I ever do this, it would be in the Definitive Edition, where they hopefully will tone down the grinding somewhat.

Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition Announced

If you've been anywhere near a Nintendo site or board in the last few days, you know that the hype for today's rumored Nintendo Direct has been crazy. And I have to admit that I got quite excited as well, hoping for announcements of both the rumored Link's Awakening remake/requel for Nintendo 3DS or the rumored Zelda Smartphone game. Or some Metroid Prime 4 footage. The last thing I was hoping for, however, was yet another port of Hyrule Warriors on the Nintendo Switch.

For someone, who has bought and completed both the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS versions including all the DLC, so far at least each version had their merits. Hyrule Warriors - Legends offered many more and much more balanced Adventure Maps, the ability to switch between characters and the new My Fairy mode. And Hyrule Warriors on the Wii U had the better graphics and performance, a local coop mode and the Challenge Mode, where you can play as Ganon or the Giant Cucco.

The "Definitive Edition", where all of these merits and all the DLCs are combined into a single ultimate version, seems like an obvious offer at this point, but it also makes the previous versions fully obsolete and makes them appear like a bad purchase, almost, which might feel like a slap in the face for all the earlier adopters. "You should have waited for Switch version!" is what Nintendo is saying right now.

They also added two Breath of the Wild costumes for Link and Zelda on top of that:

And some people actually have the effrontery to ask for more exclusive content in the Definitive Edition... As if having all the content, features and advantages of both versions isn't enough already. Well, with any new characters Nintendo should also release them on the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS as an "apology", ideally for free, which is probably why they won't add any new characters at all. But this would have been a nice opportunity to finally fill that 30th character spot, which is still glaring at us:

Well, finding a suitable 30th character as a promotion is probably still as hard as it was back then, because most of the major characters are already in the game. Hilda wouldn't feel special now and with the big and successful new Zelda game, Breath of the Wild, there are mainly the Champions as candidates for new characters, who come in a pack of four. Those should be saved for a sequel. But they could have created a Wild Link or Wild Zelda as a separate character using the Sheikah Slate, instead of just offering plain skins. On the other hand the Sheikah Slate could also fill that eight slot in Link's weapon arsenal...

(Update: A potential character from Breath of the Wild would also be Kass with the Accordion as his weapon type. He would fill that 30th character slot and it would fit his character to appear out of nowhere on the battlefield, playing his trademark tune. An alternative would also be Beedle with the Bug Net, a character that appeared in many Zelda games including the Wind Waker, the Minish Cap, the Nintendo DS Zelda games, Skyward Sword and even Breath of the Wild. He would be a nice choice for a "final" character of Hyrule Warriors.)

However, at this point, Koei Tecmo probably will save any new characters, weapons, stages or other content ideas for an actual sequel. There needs to be Hyrule Warriors 2 with a focus on Breath of the Wild for the Nintendo Switch. The Definitive Edition is just a filler for all those, who might have missed the previous versions of the game, to get some more sales out of it. It's a great title and certainly deserves every purchase, especially with that much content. But I wouldn't expect any DLC or major exclusive content for the final version.

I'm personally struggling with myself, whether I should get this or not. Well, at first I need a Nintendo Switch and yet another port in the library isn't going to change this. But when I get one, this feels similar to Mario Kart 8, where I really like the game and I'd like having the better version with all the content, but I wouldn't want to complete it yet again. The Adventure Mode is so extensive and takes so much time that I spent hundreds of hours on both Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors - Legends, where I don't feel like going through all this a third time. Well, I don't have to, but it then it feels like I'm missing on the ultimate edition of one of my absolute favorite games...

As a side note, the new "3D" fairy renders in the My Fairy mode look very weird:

I liked the sprite versions on the Nintendo 3DS much better.

Hyrule Warriors Legends: My Fairy Still Incomplete

I'm on vacation right now and brought my Nintendo 3DS with me, where last week at a Zelda fan meeting I was able to get the "Circle of Friends" Medal in Hyrule Warriors - Legends. This brought me back into the game for now, where other than completing Legend Mode on "Hero" difficulty I mostly just have grinding left to do.

Part of that is the new "My Fairy" feature, where I wanted to get at least one fairy with all skills unlocked. My motivation is quite low, however, and to a certain degree that's because Nintendo / Koei Tecmo never bothered with fully offering everything there is. Or does anyone outside of Japan actually have the following costume...?

No? Me neither. And that's bugging me, because I would really like to use it on my developed fire fairy, since most fire outfits don't look as nice.

Together with Link's Classic Tunic, there were four sets of My Fairy Clothing only available as rewards in special offers, e.g. as a preorder bonus. This was over a year ago and today Nintendo could offer these as a reward on My Nintendo. There are hardly any worthwhile rewards available anyway and these gifts were originally received as download codes, so it would work pretty well.

Other than that Koei Tecmo started adding new fairy designs, including the following beauty:

They only did so for the elements Light, Darkness and Water. But they never bothered with adding new fairies for the elements Fire and Lightning... Those could have been retroactively placed on any Adventure Map, but we never saw any more updates. And at this point it's doubtful that Koei Tecmo would provide another update for the game. They are busy with Fire Emblem Warriors right now and probably are going to work on Hyrule Warriors 2 afterwards.

But in the very least Nintendo should offer the missing clothing via My Nintendo.

Hyrule Warriors: Collaboration Character?

With a potential 30th character slot open in both Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors - Legends, I had another thought. What if Koei Tecmo planned to include a character from another Nintendo game as further collaboration and as a way to test reactions about future "Nintendo Warriors" installments? After all they expressed interest in Mario Warriors and Pokémon Warriors in the past...

I'm personally not the biggest fan of the idea, because I want Koei Tecmo to focus on Hyrule Warriors for now. There's still so much potential left and with a sequel we could easily go up to twice as many characters. There are many good characters left, who would have deserved the 30th slot, such as Hilda, Linebeck or Groose, so adding some character from another game would leave a sour taste, especially if it's some completely lame entry like Mario or Marth.

I don't even see the appeal in a Mario Warriors or Pokémon Warriors. Koei Tecmo already did make the Pokémon Conquest games, while Pokémon Tekken should give the Pokémon fans the fighting action that they want. And Mario has enough spin-offs as it is. The only Nintendo franchise that I could see getting a Warriors spin-off in the distant future, is Fire Emblem. But that's certainly not as popular as Zelda and having a Fire Emblem character in Hyrule Warriors right now probably wouldn't mean much to the fans.

However, there's one character that I could imagine to be part of the game and where I certainly wouldn't mind the cameo: Samus.

She would fit the roster of beautiful and strong females very well. They could even implement her Power Suit as a Focus Spirit mechanic, which could be pretty cool. And it would be a nice way for Koei Tecmo to honor the 30th Anniversaries of both Zelda and Metroid together.

In 2012 one of Koei Tecmo's earlier collaborations with Nintendo were costumes in Dynasty Warriors Vs. on the 3DS, see here. Next to a Link costume, they also had one of Zero Suit Samus:

So, both of this can be viewed as their preferences at the time, where Hyrule Warriors became a reality two years later. A Metroid Warriors wouldn't carry much potential on its own, but in the very least they could have Samus guest star in Hyrule Warriors. This could even tie in to amiibo, so that it's only available for people with a Samus or Zero Suit Samus amiibo... Nintendo would certainly love the idea.

Now, such a cameo character would at least explain, why it's not as neatly integrated as the other DLC characters were in Legends. You wouldn't want to suddenly run into Samus on Hyrule Field or collect her Heart Containers from Lorule, because she's out of place in this universe. It makes sense to keep such a character completely separate from the rest of the game, while it still could be fun to play as her. So, it could add up.

Again, it's more likely that the 30th character slot won't ever be filled, but that won't stop us from speculating. And if it has to be a character from another franchise, then Samus probably would be the most exciting addition.

Hyrule Warriors Legends: 8th SpotPass Gift

Just as a reminder, we're getting another SpotPass gift for Hyrule Warriors - Legends today. This was already announced a month ago (see here), but nevertheless it should be mentioned again. Here are the goods:

  • 1.000.000 Rupees
  • 5x Golden/Delicious Light Fruit
  • 5x Golden/Delicious Mushroom Spores
  • 5x Golden/Delicious Elixir Soup
  • 5x Golden/Delicious Hyoi Pear

It doesn't accompany any update, but in case we're really getting a version 1.7.0, I would expect it to be released around Christmas. Such an update would add at least one of the two missing fairy designs (Fire and Lightning), as well as the various special / preorder offerings, which includes the Classic Tunic for Link and some fairy clothing. Some people already have this stuff (I got the Classic Tunic and the Classic and Twilight Sets of clothing at launch), but together with the additional fairies there should be something new for everybody as a nice little Christmas gift.

We'll see. It's not certain, but the fact that we're still getting SpotPass promotions might lead the way to one final update that completes the game.

Update: It appears that North America didn't get the 1 Million Rupees this time. Might be an oversight.

Ciao Ciao, Cia

This is a continuation of this post.

After completing the Lorule Map and with it the entirety of Adventure Mode, there isn't much left to be done for me in Hyrule Warriors - Legends except for grinding. I'm not in a rush with this, mostly just playing one hour per day, but ideally before Hyrule Warriors 2 comes out I want to be done with the game and have every character in their best possible form, which means Level 255, at least one perfect weapon build and all badges. The latter is already finished, so what's left is mostly leveling everyone up, unsealing weapon skills and collecting best possible weapons for the new additions.

And naturally I already achieved these goals with my favorite character, Cia... There she is, full 255 Levels and 60 Heart Containers:

The attack level becomes pretty ridiculous, it's nearly 700 more than a weapon with Legendary on it:

In the end I mostly played her on the first Adventure Map and the first half of the Great Sea Map, where I was clearing them from Item Cards and where you only get very little EXP, to prolong the process as much as possible, while unlocking a Legendary weapon seal on the way. So, I took my sweet time with her.

That Legendary weapon seal was also the last missing piece for her "perfect" weapon:

I know that Legendary doesn't make any real difference in the end due to the damage cap and high attack power you get from the levels. So, it can be a waste to put this on your weapons, but I do it anyway, mostly for the aesthetics and because it doesn't really feel complete without it. You want to break at least one of these seals with every character to show your determination.

And I personally don't know what else I would put on the weapons anyway. I'm not a fan of the Duel or Special category skills, because they are highly situational. "No Healing" is only good in Adventure Mode, but it can be a hindrance whenever you're not bound to A ranks or whenever you want to use the "Heart Strong" skill. "Defenseless" is also bad, if you like the occasional blocking, e.g. against Manhandla. (I wish that "Heart Strong" was actually a skill under the Special category, which makes more sense, because nearly all the Special skills have a downside, while the rest of the Augment skill don't. And the opposite of Heart Strong, Adversity, also falls under the Special category.) "VS Dragon" is pretty nice, but then again it's only useful for missions with the corresponding enemies in it.

And with Bombos active you don't really need the additional damage boost, in fact the new Heart Power skill should be more than enough. The only other must-have is "Hasty Attacks", though not every weapon is actually better with it (depends on how much you rely on certain combos and such). But it's certainly a skill that I enjoy with Cia, especially deploying the C6 quickly for the giant bosses can be crucial.

On a site note, I don't really like the looks of her "Crackling Scepter", because it doesn't go as well with most costumes as the beautiful Scepter of Souls. The latter makes a great combo with her new Koholint costume for example:

The "golden" Crackling Scepter only looks okay with her Master Wind Waker costume, which is also quite nice, but I do prefer the above combo.

Anyway, I won't have to worry about that for a while, because now Cia has to rest and it's the other characters' turns. After I'm done with the majority of characters, I want to play Legend Mode / Free Mode in the "Hero" difficulty, which is where I probably will use Cia for most of the time again. But until then it's good-bye.

Hyrule Warriors (Legends): Rearranged Rosters

Now, that the rosters of both Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors - Legends are final, I can't help but feel a little bugged by how Koei Tecmo simply sorted all the characters by when they were added to the games and not by meaning. So, I started to rearrange the rosters in my head and made a little project, where I threw the character select screens into Photoshop.

My criteria for the new order were simple enough:

  • Sort the characters by games / eras.
  • Put different versions of the same character above each other, e.g. Zelda and Sheik.

On the Nintendo 3DS this turned out pretty well...

As you can see, the different Links are all together in one row together with the two prominent sidekick guides. The columns then list the characters from the same game or era. This worked out so well, because the columns have five slots each and for the most part there are teams of five connected characters, so each column has its own "theme":

  • Zelda Main Characters in Hyrule Warriors
  • Hyrule Warriors Original Characters
  • Ocarina of Time / Majora's Mask Era
  • Toon Eras
  • Twilight Princess (only 4)
  • Other

Ghirahim and Fi had to split, where I decided to put Ghirahim below his buddy Zant, so that most of the villains are on the lower rows (which put Medli in an odd place). It also put Fi right next to Midna, which places these two guide sidekicks together as well, as I already mentioned earlier.

A good new order for the Wii U roster isn't as obvious as first, but if you map the exact same order onto the Wii U character select screen, it also works out quite well:

The Twilight Team gets split in the middle here, but otherwise it's all nicely connected. I also like, how Cia ended up next to Link.

Well, I suppose with Hyrule Warriors 2 Koei Tecmo could aim at an order more similar to this.

Hyrule Warriors: 30th Anniversary DLC Character?

Look at the current roster of Hyrule Warriors - Legends...

With such a blatant gap in the character select menu, you ought to ask, whether they might have planned a 30th character for the game. It's the 30th Anniversary of The Legend of Zelda after all and receiving one final character would certainly be a nice gift. This idea isn't new, in fact I've dealt with it on Hyrule Blog several times already (for example here).

However, I personally thought that this character would be Hilda, because so far every DLC character, both free and paid, has been integrated into the DLC Adventure Mode Maps of Legends. They get their higher weapon tiers there, as well as 15 collectible Heart Containers. This is much better than on the Wii U, where save for Cia, Volga and Wizzro all DLC characters stayed autonomous with nothing to do and their tier 2 and 3 weapons unlocked already. They could add one more character to Legends that works the same way, but he or she would break all current patterns and then give you a tier 4 weapon right from the start...

For a full new character it would need another Adventure Mode Map, but update 1.6.0 already added a medal for receiving all other medals, which is a big indicator that they don't plan to add any more Adventure Mode Maps or anything bigger at all. I had this vision, where they could have used the Level 9 dungeon from The Legend of Zelda as a finale map, but that seems off the table for now. And retroactively adding the characters' goodies on older Adventure Maps might be too much of an override. It's still possible that we're getting an autonomous character, but chances are slim.

And to be totally honest, I wouldn't even know, who would make a good candidate at this point. There are plenty of characters left, but most of them are either best saved for a sequel or should have been paired with any of the previous DLC offerings. Toon Ganondorf, Makar, Linebeck, Byrne, Hilda... All of them have potential, but if Koei Tecmo had them planned, we already would have gotten them with the corresponding DLC packs. After all Medli was released for free alongside the Master Wind Waker Pack and not just now. If they had Toon Ganondorf or Makar planned, they could have turned the Master Wind Waker Pack into a full DLC pack with two new characters. So, I doubt that we will see them now. Same goes for Linebeck, Byrne or Hilda, who could have accompanied the DLC featuring their games.

Groose has been requested quite often by fans, which even was acknowledged by Koei Tecmo (which is a big deal, they did the same for Yuga and Linkle), but he would be completely loose at this point. Groose is such an obvious choice, because he left an apparent gap inside the story mode, where Skyward Sword was the only era to not feature two heroes. And even his weaponry is part of the story campaign, so all it ever needed is Groose to be part of the Sealed Grounds scenario as well. But that's best done in a sequel, where they can change the story accordingly or come up with an entire new story.

Another request that I see often is Vaati from The Minish Cap, but according to producer Yosuke Hayashi at the Wondercon earlier this year this would be "difficult". There was no further elaboration on that, but right now we have to assume that all the Capcom Zelda games are off-limits.

One of my favorite picks outside the Capcom games would be Nabooru, but again she's someone, who's best delivered in a sequel together with a Gerudo Fortress / Desert Colossus stage and Twinrova as her personal opponent. That would be great and right now she would feel rather out of place and meaningless.

And there lies the problem... If this is really supposed to be a 30th Anniversary gift, then it should be something meaningful and not just some side character from a game that already has been featured. Agahnim from A Link to the Past could make a great classic character, but his role is too similar to Yuga's, where adding him right after Yuga would be somewhat uninteresting. On GameFAQs I see people often suggest the Old Man from The Legend of Zelda as a "joke character", where all his quotes are from the original game, like "Master using this and you can have it". But I'm not sure about getting such a faceless character just for the laughs. The old man got more defined in later games with characters such as Saharahla or Oshus, where you might even find a good weapon type to go with them (Oshus could use his cane).

There's also the Old Man in Breath of the Wild, who probably has a more important role, and it's slightly possible that they might try to promote the game with a new character in Hyrule Warriors. It wouldn't be the Link from the game, because that could just be realized as a costume for Link and maybe a Sheikah Slate weapon type (which could finally give him an actual Darkness weapon). In the very least I could imagine them doing the costume, but any of it will have to wait until the actual game was released. And at this point Koei Tecmo might be already working on a sequel for Nintendo Switch, where Breath of the Wild certainly will be a great base for new content. So, I doubt that they would do anything beyond a costume.

With that I'm at an impasse. A new character might not integrate well into Legends without any new Adventure Mode Maps and there doesn't even seem to be any real candidates at this point. So, it's best to get used to that gap in the lower right corner, because it might never be filled.

But at least we can still expect some smaller goodies like costumes or additional fairy contents, where I made a post about potential future updates here.

Update: There's also the possibility that there's going to be a collaboration character from another Nintendo franchise, e.g. Samus. In that case it would even make sense for the final character to be separated from the rest of the game. See this further post for more thoughts about this idea.

Hyrule Warriors Legends: Future Updates?

The Legends of Hyrule Pack is through and with the A Link Between Worlds DLC Hyrule Warriors - Legends should be completed. But it's still possible that Koei Tecmo will give us additional updates for the game in the future with some content for free.

In the very least there is still some stuff that's not available for everyone yet:

Like with the new Darkness Fairy that got added in version 1.6.0, it's possible that the rest of the fairy goodies also gets added retroactively to the original Adventure Mode Maps. All the fairy rewards don't count towards map completion anyway, so it wouldn't be a big deal, if some of it got added after you've completed the maps. This also goes for fairy clothing. If you've already received them as gifts, they will be simply checked off on the map after the update, like you've gotten them in the mission before.

As for the Classic Tunic, they could just unlock it with the 1.7.0 update - after all that's the same version number, when the Wii U game got this costume for free last year. Or alternatively it could be a reward on the Rewards Map for one of the multiple missions that don't actually hold a reward, e.g. "Chosen by Fate". And there's the possibility that one of the new Zelda amiibo (e.g. 8-Bit Link) does the trick, similar to how the Spinner was unlocked by Link's amiibo in the Wii U version.

(I would also like them to add the Dark Toon Link costume, as well as all his Four Swords colors, while they're at it. I give them points for creativity when it comes to Toon Link's costumes, but that he doesn't have any of his obvious colors is kind of weird.)

Of course it might be that Koei Tecmo will sell these as small content packs like they did with the preorder costumes on the Wii U, but I doubt it. It doesn't hold the same value as the costumes back then, since the additional fairy sets are for the most part just recolors of existing pieces. And the Classic Tunic used to be free DLC on the Wii U, where it would be weird, if they suddenly tried to sell it on the 3DS. Those weren't DLC content packs anyway, all of the preorder / special offer content was already in the base game and received as presents from the Extras menu. And they should stay as that, as gifts.

We will certainly get another SpotPass offering later this month and I suppose that either around that time or around Christmas we will see the 1.7.0 update with some, if not all of the missing contents.

But considering that there are two fairy designs "missing", a fifth Fire Fairy and a fifth Lightning Fairy, they might split it up into two different updates, 1.7.0 and 1.8.0. Throw out some small gifts here and there to keep the game in the news and to keep the player base interested.

There also remains the question of a potential 30th character... But that's for another post.

Hyrule Warriors Legends: Lorule Map Impressions

Complete. With the Lorule Map we can finally conclude the gigantic chapter of the Adventure Mode in Hyrule Warriors - Legends. A total of ten Adventure Maps (including the Rewards Map) provide you with numerous missions and tons of unlockables. The Lorule Map is certainly not an exception and keeps up the good quality that came with both the Koholint and Grand Travels Maps.

First of all, this is the Hyrule and Lorule from A Link Between Worlds in the glorious 8-Bit style. And it's quite the accurate representation, which is very nice after the weirdly distorted environments of the previous two DLC Adventure Maps. It's also surprisingly linear, unlike the original game. It does have a very nice flow to it, though. You keep opening up parts of Lorule and these separate parts are very suitable for individual play sessions. So, you might just go and play the Skull Woods area for today. With the confined areas it has a good structure and you get a much better sense of completion and progress than most of the other Adventure Maps, where you go all over the place.

You also don't have to replay missions for Item Cards, not even once. With the right course everything puts itself together very well. It does some teasing, where you early on see an ice statue, but you won't be able to get the Fire Rod until the very end, but otherwise you can usually get what you need within the vicinity. It's of note that this is the only Adventure Map that doesn't have a Compass Item Card. But you don't need this anyway, because it's always obvious where you have to use what item.

The Item Cards also activate Nice Powers, but this feels somewhat like wasted potential, because ten of them just change the recommended element. Only Bombs and Hammer give you some bonus effects, which are Rupee and attack power increases. You can have two of these effects at once, but the next item card used will overwrite them.

The options with the Instruments of the Sirens were certainly richer, but in the very least the Lorule Map keeps giving you double weapons, exactly like the Termina Map. I personally would have preferred some other bonus, like a constant EXP boost, but it does help with weapon grinding.

And it does so, because they did add "Divisive plan" missions for the characters who didn't have one yet, with the exception of Marin. And with the double weapon drops they are now the best way to grind for perfect weapons, especially the fight against three Yugas on D14. Sadly, both Volga and Ruto became low level missions, so you don't have a natural grinding spot for Lightning and Water weapons, but I do understand that they wanted to give Yuga and Cia the higher spots. It's just that again the best missions are preferred by Light weapons.

In general, this map plays very quickly, despite it also having the full size of 16 x 8 squares. That's because there are no missions with a fixed time frame, e.g. "Rack up your K.O. count" or K.O. / Rupee competitions. For the most part you can also chose a 2nd character, which lets you easily plow through the whole thing with your main character(s). The difficulty is about the same level as all the DLC maps. It can get a little tougher with the 4+ weapon missions, but it's nowhere near Twilight Wii U fake difficulty.

So, again it's all very moderate, but if you were hoping for a challenge for your fully built characters, then you will be disappointed. It does make sense in terms of the DLC, though. Some people might only buy the one map, because they don't have the time or the money for it all. And if you then get something ridiculous as the Wii U Twilight Map, it sure will feel like you bought the wrong content. Also, with new characters like Ravio and Yuga on the map, you don't want the difficulty to skyrocket.

(It just would be nice if you had something to do with your fully developed characters. The Wii U version has the Challenge Mode for this and while I really don't miss this mode, I do miss a good opportunity to use your high level characters with perfect weapon builds.)

Anyway, there are two new Challenge Battle types. One is called "Scour the battlefield in pursuit of victory!" and has enemy characters hide under some random officer monsters. You have to beat right one to uncover the hiding foe. This can be a little bit annoying, because like with the Turncoat Soldier missions they might appear sometime after the fact that you defeated the officer. The second new type is called "Hunt down and defeat your foe!" (which should have been the name of the first new type), which is basically a new variant of "Defeat all Giant Bosses" just with Bombchus. Those can remove a significant amount of health from the giant bosses, but you can also just ignore them and defeat the bosses without help.

In addition, they added a new Adventure Battle type, where you have to capture six keeps. Sounds simple, but it does feature some very aggressive and respawning teams of Keep Saboteurs, which swiftly take your own keeps. In fact, such enemy aggression is rarely ever felt in the game, where you really have to do some defending here. Otherwise Koei Tecmo focused too much on the same Adventure Battle types here, especially "Use diversionary tactics to defeat the enemy!" with the Magic Stash Troopers gets used one too many times...

There is also a new supporter mechanic, where Ravio appears on the battlefield, but he doesn't join you right away. As the coward he is, he waits for you to beat many enemies first, before he feels safe enough to join you. You can also just go and kill him first, which is the Cia thing to do. But since Ravio is a theme here, I was also playing much more cowardly than usual thanks to the new Magic Fountain+ ability, which lets you blast away everything with Fairy Magic by just tapping the touchscreen corner repeatedly. Strats.

For your efforts you finally get the remaining 4+ weapons, the last Heart Containers for everyone, as well as new costumes, where the selection is quite good, but not perfect. I like that Lana and Cia got a Zelda and Hilda costume pair, that's pretty nice. And everyone of the sages got featured as a costume. On the other hand it's weird that seemingly quite some characters, like Linkle, got a Ravio recolor (should I call her "Raviole" in that case?), but not Link himself. It's the first time that he didn't get a costume, while it's also the first time during this DLC season that a color costume for him would have been perfectly clear. While he did have a purple tunic outfit from the Master Quest Map, it doesn't have the dark hair or the striped scarf. So, no real Ravio costume for Link is really a missed opportunity.

I was also hoping for some good fairy clothing, since this is probably the last time, where we will receive a big batch of content. The new stuff is alright, but it still feels like there is a lack of options, especially for Fire Fairies. For example, I was hoping for something that could make the Din lookalike actually look like Din in terms of clothing. It's possible for Nayru, but not for Din, and overall the fire clothing is pretty lackluster. Also, completing the map doesn't give a new fairy slot, so we're still at 14.

Overall, the Lorule Map is really good. It's full size, plays very fluidly and is neatly organized. It does leave some things to be desired, though, especially the lack of Hilda feels like a big chasm within the environment.

Hyrule Warriors: Ravio and Yuga Impressions

The A Link Between Worlds Pack for Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors: Legends gave us two character additions from the lands of Lorule, the cowardly salesman Ravio and the demonic art collector Yuga. Compared to some additions from the previous DLC offerings, they don't seem to be particularly outstanding, but let's still take a short look at how they turned out...

Ravio

While his running animation is certainly hilarious, Ravio doesn't seem to offer everything that you would have expected, like a varied multi-element moveset based on all his shop items. It's just all Darkness and not all of it are weapons from his shop.

With DLC characters Koei usually likes to recycle some assets from the game to get them done and he really got the short end of the stick with that. Instead of the items from his shop, the Bow, Bombs and Boomerang he uses are simply the Hyrule Warriors variants, mostly in their upgraded forms. So, instead of using the Tornado Rod to create tornados, Ravio throws the Power-up Boomerang at things... And that seems a little bit like a low effort from Koei Tecmo's end.

Only the Hammer and Ice Rod are really from his shop, where these two tools essentially work in combination with each other, which is pretty nice, because freezing things and smashing them with a Hammer was one of the first true item combos in the Zelda series. The Ice Rod gets utilized in most of the combos and it really should have been the "Hammer + Ice Rod" weapon type, where the Ice Rod also has visible tiers.

But I do like the Rental Hammer tiers, especially the Nice Hammer variant with the Triforce symbolic on it. The handle even resembles Hilda's scepter as a reference, which makes me a little sad that she wasn't part of the last DLC wave as well. Other than that, Ravio didn't get all that many references. You can't take off his bunny mask in any way, you can only look under it to catch a glimpse of who's really under there (but they didn't create an actual face). His buddy Sheerow is also nowhere to be found...

They didn't go all-in with this character, but this at least leaves some potential for a sequel. There he could get a Tornado Rod weapon type with Sheerow in it, a maskless costume and more.

The moveset in itself also could be better, while it isn't entirely terrible either. His charged C1 launches enemies inwards, which can be used for some follow-up combos, but he isn't really all that good at anything particular. Especially breaking Weak Point Gauges of Giant Bosses seems to be difficult in one turn. That he isn't the strongest does fit his character, though... I also do like how they captured his clumsiness within the moveset, e.g. the Focus Spirit Finisher, where he drops the big Bomb.

For his badges he needs mostly Impa and Gohma materials, so nothing special. It's quite weird that the drops Young Link's materials, though. Why not Link's? Link drops an actual SCARF like Ravio has, which would have fit much better. This is another devil detail that just annoys me.

Yuga

Marvel at the most glorious victory animation in the entire game! Koei Tecmo outdid themselves with that and Yuga overall leaves a good impression at first glance. At least on the Wii U. I really do like the visual and sound effects with his weapon on the home console, however, it seems quite butchered on the 3DS system. It just doesn't give the same strong feeling, when he whirls around the picture frame in a large area.

That's probably the best part of his moveset, the wide range of the attack string. In addition, he has an interesting mechanic, where you can leave a magic circle after each combo by holding down the button. These circles freeze enemies in place and explode after a little while, which can also be used strategically to capture enemies in your combos. He also uses the Fire element for his C3 combo, which works good enough on Manhandla, while his C4 wrecks Argorok.

That's about it. The moveset also does leave little to desire when it comes to references. He hops into a painting with his C1, he shoots strong electric bolts with the C4, he even summons Ganon's trident with multiple moves and there are various sound effects from A Link Between Worlds, which is nice. The only thing that I'm missing would be summoning soldiers by painting them. It would have been amazing to see the classic A Link to the Past soldiers in 3D...

He drops Ganondorf's materials, but he doesn't need them himself. You would expect him to be the big Ganon fanatic that Toon Zelda turned out to be, but he likes Argorok and Lana instead. Well, whatever... I also did get used to his new design pretty quickly and overall he seems like a solid addition to the game, but nothing extraordinary.

Hyrule Warriors Legends: Last Dual-Elemental Weapons

The final DLC has been released and with its Lorule Map we get the remaining 11 dual-elemental weapons. Let's see, how these do or do not meet our expectations from last time. I've personally haven't unlocked any of them yet, but SmokeRulz has compiled a complete list on GameFAQs:

Okay, out of these 11 I've only anticipated two of them: the Dark Tome and the Light Crossbows. These made sense, unlike some other stuff on the list. The Light and Darkness combo is heavily overpowered, because the majority of the character enemies are weak to either one, and I didn't expect to get this for the main weapons of the Triforce Trio, especially since it feels weird to have them all use their opposing element so directly. I would have given the Water element to the Great Swords ("Swords of the Flood") and the Fire element to both the Hylian Sword and the Rapier. Link could have gotten the Darkness element on some of his other weapons, maybe the Spinner, not sure.

Also, Impa definitely should have gotten the Darkness element. She's the Sage of Shadows after all... And this just seems like a missed opportunity. It also would have helped somewhat with the balance of element combinations, which currently seems completely off:

Why do we need so many Light + Water weapons? Impa's Giant Blade is a great example, where they should have chosen another element instead, because we only have two Dark Water weapons at the end. The devil is in the details with Koei Tecmo, it's weird choices like this that really bug me in the game.

Hyrule Warriors Legends: Update 1.6.0

The A Link Between Worlds Pack got released yesterday worldwide and as usual we got another update with the game. However, it offered a little bit more than usual, so let's take a look. Next to a new fairy there are quite some new Fairy Rental Skills, a new weapon skill, as well as new medals. They also raised the level cap for the final time and they fixed that glitch, where you were unable to enter the center of the Grand Travels Map, if you left without saving after unlocking it.

Here's the new Fairy design for the Darkness element:

Looks good, doesn't it? It's certainly one the prettier designs and I'm glad that I didn't put all too many resources into a Darkness Fairy yet. But unlike the fairies that they added with the versions 1.4 and 1.5 it doesn't come with a new fairy slot and it's also not found on the new Lorule Map. They retroactively put her on the first Adventure Map, where you can find her on square H12 (that's on the southern shoreline) in the Enemy Base.

This also means that there is still a maximum of 14 fairy slots, unless you unlock another one by beating the Lorule Map this time (this remains to be seen). We also haven't gotten an alternative fairy design for the Fire and Lightning elements yet. They might add those in the same way in future updates or they might never happen. We'll see.

In addition to the new fairy they also added several Rental Skills, five of them in the rainbow color tier. There are improved versions of the Material Master, Weapon Master, Special Fountain, Magic Fountain and Extreme Crush skills. I already got the "Magic Fountain+", which you can now use three times per battle. And that's one powerful skill.

To unlock all of this you will need a lot of Fairy Food, but they have adjusted the Food drop rate. They seemingly tripled the amount, so you can get up to three foods in a normal battle and up to six on the Grand Travels Map. The Food+ skill, the Food Drop mixture and the Food Master Rental Skill will also increase the amount. So, collecting lots of food will be much easier now, even if it's at the expense of Material drops.

There's something for the weapon builders as well, because they added the new Heart Power skill. There is a new "HLTH" category for this and it is indeed sealed under 5000 K.O.s - but like with Legendary you don't have to appraise it to know what you're getting, because it's the only skill in that category. It's also easily the most useful skill next to Hasty Attacks, because it increases your damage based on your total amount of Heart Containers (not your actual health, as I previously thought, so you can still combine this with No Healing, if you want to). Now, there's finally a good reason to collect all the Heart Containers for every character, where with the level cap of 255 and the Lorule Map we finally reached the maximum of 60 hearts. So, look out for the 5000 seal! You certainly want this skill on your best weapons.

They also added five new medals, but it's what you would expect. There are the usual three medals for completing the Lorule Map, one for reaching level 255 with a character and one final medal for collecting all other medals. They added the same thing with the Boss Pack DLC on the Wii U and this is a huge indicator that they are done with this game for the most part. I was considering the possibility of a free DLC Adventure Map as a grand finale that comes with a 30th character, but in that case they wouldn't have added this medal yet.

We have yet to get the special offer costumes (Link's Classic Tunic and four My Fairy clothing sets), but they might just retroactively put them somewhere in a future update like they did with the new fairy.

Hyrule Warriors Legends: 7th and 8th SpotPass Gifts

Koei Tecmo already revealed the next (and probably final) two offerings of SpotPass goodies for Hyrule Warriors - Legends on their website. The first one will accompany the A Link Between Worlds Pack and the second one is scheduled for November 24th. And this is what they will contain...

October 31st SpotPass Gift:

  • 1.000.000 Rupees
  • 5x Golden/Delicious Stamina Fruit
  • 5x Golden/Delicious Water Fruit
  • 5x Golden/Delicious All-Purpos Bait
  • 5x Golden/Delicious Carrot

(Update: Apparently in North America you receive various types of fish instead. So, the above list only applies to Japan and Europe.)

November 24th SpotPass Gift:

  • 1.000.000 Rupees
  • 5x Golden/Delicious Light Fruit
  • 5x Golden/Delicious Mushroom Spores
  • 5x Golden/Delicious Elixir Soup
  • 5x Golden/Delicious Hyoi Pear

Make sure you stay under 9.000.000 Rupees before these dates, so nothing is lost. A little bit more variety with the free food would have been nice, because we already got all of this before, but you don't look a gift horse in the mouth and you can now always get "free" food from Linebeck anyway.

Note that there have been a total of 11 SpotPass gifts in Japan, three more than in other regions. That's because they released the SpotPass fairies separately during the time, when Hyrule Warriors - Legends wasn't out yet in the West. We then got the fairies combined with the later Food and Rupee gifts. There don't seem to be any additional SpotPass Fairies coming and it looks like there will be a total of 15 My Fairy slots available in the end:

  • 3 Fairy slots from the start
  • 3 Fairy slots via SpotPass
  • 3 Fairy slots 2 Fairy slots via updates
  • 6 Fairy slots from beating Adventure Maps (including Master Wind Waker)

(Update: the 1.6.0 update didn't give another My Fairy slot! So, it's only 14 in total.)

Keep in mind that these SpotPass gifts will only be available for one year, so if you're interested in Hyrule Warriors - Legends, make sure to grab the game before March 2017, if you don't want to miss anything.

Hyrule Warriors Legends: A Link Between Worlds DLC Reveal

Finally, the last DLC for Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors - Legends has been revealed on the Japanese website. You can also find screenshots here. It's scheduled to be released on October 31st, which is weird, because these DLC packs all came out on Thursdays before. Might be different for us, though.

After my expectations I can't help but feel somewhat disappointed. I really was hoping to see Hilda as a surprise 30th character that would come with this pack to complete the Lorule trio at this point, but that's not happening. Of course you're in for a disappointment, if you're expecting such a thing, but it looked like a good possibility. I'm also not sure about some of the design choices, but let's take a look:

While Ravio does indeed use the many different items from his shop, the Hammer was chosen as the main weapon type. I must admit that the Hammer was always one of the images that first came into my mind, when I thought about Ravio and his shop. Him smashing the thing just looks so powerful. But it's still a weird choice for Hyrule Warriors, because Darunia already has a Hammer weapon type and this looks exactly like the Hammer item that every character can use in the game. Of course with Medli we also got two Lyres now, so characters having similar, but yet very different weapon types already was a thing. It still looks a little redundant and they could have chosen the Tornado Rod instead or even the Bracelet.

Anyway, at least it should be easy to find tiers based on A Link Between Worlds and Tri Force Heroes. In the various screenshots he's also using Bombs and Ice Rod, while the description mentions the Boomerang and tornados. This is probably the kind of moveset that you would have imagined upfront, but it also does remove all possibilities for him having additional weapon types in the future. He's another one-weapon-character.

The Hammer also seems to be a Darkness type and it feels a little bit like they went with it, because the Tornado Rod would probably have been a Lightning type weapon, while Yuga already will get this element. With all his lightning attacks in A Link Between Worlds, this was a rather obvious choice and it's nice to finally have a villain, who's not primarily a Darkness user. It's also the first character to be primarily a Lightning user since the base game on Wii U, so I wouldn't have mind two of those. With Ravio it probably doesn't matter much anyway, because I expect him to work in a similar fashion to Sheik, where every combo might trigger a different elemental effect.

Yuga does look kind of weird, though. Koei Tecmo really keeps surprising me, but not always in good ways. When I originally thought about characters from A Link Between Worlds back in the Wii U days, I imagined them remade in a more realistic style. But then Koei just went with the original artstyles for every new game including the characters from The Wind Waker, so I expected them to go with the chibi artstyle here. With Hilda I would have even loved this. But they didn't. His face looks very strange, but that does seem only to be the case on the artwork, not in the game. I'm also intrigued about how Hilda and an unmasked Ravio would have looked like in this style, but we're probably not going to see this yet.

His moveset looks great, lots of picture frames and lightnings in there. Can't wait to try the new characters out. I still hope that he really does use the wall merge technique in some combo, e.g. his Focus Spirit finisher, by just summoning a wall in front of him.

It's not so easy to tell what the new Adventure Map is all about, but at least it seems like I got most of the Item Cards right. There are Maimais and all the items from Ravio's shop, as well as a Painting Link. And there are the Power Gloves, as well as probably the Compass. It also looks like I was right about this being a combination of Hyrule and Lorule on a big 16x8 squares field:

On this screenshot you can clearly see the border in the center. On the top left there is the Death Mountain area of Hyrule and to the top right there are the Skull Woods of Lorule. And I suppose I was right about opening portals to Lorule via a Bracelet or in this case the Paiting Link item card. This all adds up.

I also expected there to be some sort of cheat or bonus functionality and it seems like that's the purpose of the Ravio head at the bottom. You sell him item cards (much like to Linebeck on the Grand Travels Map) and he activates various bonuses, like changing the recommended element or giving you more Rupees throughout the mission. It might have the same potential as the Instruments of the Sirens on the Koholint Map and maybe even more.

I wonder, if we will get the preorder bonus costumes on the map, which includes the Classic Tunic for Link and various fairy outfits. It might just be that those, who have already gotten them via preorder bonus, will have already unlocked them from the start. But on the other hand this would cheat these people out of new rewards, which were promised with the new DLC map.

At least some of the new rewards will yield some pretty amazing costumes. Finally there's something nice for Twili Midna:

I'm not sure, what this is supposed to be other than the color trip from traveling between worlds, but it also reminds me of Splatoon. But it makes sense for her to represent the portals, since her Mirror weapon used to be a portal between worlds as well. I don't like the purple hair all that much, but otherwise this will finally be a pretty sweet costume for her. And Ruto as Oren looks excellent as well:

Ruto has pretty much one of the best collections of recolor costumes in the game.

There also will be the 1.6.0 update, which does indeed come with new Rental Skills, but also with new Weapon Skills including one that does more damage based on your total health (it might just be the one new skill, since there is no clear plural in Japanese). It's like a better version of Heart Strong and seems to be an absolute must-have skill. It annoys me that with some characters I've already built perfect weapons, because I most likely are going to have to change the setups here and there after the update. Luckily with some characters I couldn't decide on the eight skill yet, which might come in handy now. Otherwise this will cost me a lot of Rupees for the skill removals. I expect the new skill to be under a 5000 K.O. seal, so there will be also much more grinding to do... yay. Or it could be a new skill under the Special or Augment categories, where I would hope for a new Special skill, because I'm not a fan of No Healing and alike. And this does sound like a health based variant of Compatriot.

Hyrule Warriors Legends: Grind Fest

The good news about Hyrule Warriors - Legends is that you don't need excessive grinding in order to complete its Adventure Mode. So far the difficulty always stayed at a moderate level, so that character levels above 100 or even carefully built weapons aren't really necessary. The bad news is that grinding takes a lot longer than on the Wii U, if you still decide to bring your characters to the absolute maximum.

Leveling got slowed down significantly. If you try the typical "Rack up your K.O. count!" or "Put an end to the enemies' divisive plan!" missions that were best for leveling on the Wii U, you will only get around two fifths of the Experience. Also, the new 4 and 4+ weapon ranks are much rarer to obtain. So, overall the whole process takes a lot more patience than previously on the Wii U. Still, I decided to go for 100% completion and beyond, where I will now share some of my current impressions and strategies.

My first goal was crafting all the Badges for all characters. For the most part I was just missing materials from King Dodongo, Gohma and Ganon, where all of them can be found together in one mission on the Adventure Map, the one in the Death Mountain area with a Heart Piece for Ganondorf (there is the same mission on the east coast on the Master Quest Map, but the bosses have more health there). However, Toon Zelda needs so many Ganon materials that I had to resort to the "Final Battles!" of both the Twilight and Koholint Map (with double material drops). These missions take longer to play, but you're almost guaranteed to get Ganon materials, while in the Challenge Battle mission you often get weapon or food drops from Ganon. So, in the end it got the job done much faster.

After completing the Badge Market I set the following three goals:

  • Getting all characters to MAX Level
  • Obtaining and building best possible weapons (where applicable)
  • Creating a complete Fairy

I'm still in the middle of all of this, but it's going strong thanks to the new Grand Travels Map. It has not only one, but four "Put an end to the enemies' divisive plan!" missions in red zones. These missions can be beaten within under a minute and they will score you about one Level, three weapons, two food (gold or silver) and a few materials including a golden one, if you're lucky. This used to better on the Wii U, where you would gain around 2.5 levels per run and get drops from every clone, but it's still one of the most effective missions for grinding.

If you're just trying to level your characters, the various K.O. or Rupee competitions with their constantly respawning dark enemies are probably the fastest way to do so, but the "Divisive plan" battles will net you much more stuff in the same time frame. I'm essentially hitting all three birds with one stone here, because I'm not only leveling characters, but also getting good weapons and lots of food. For the process you'd ideally want a weapon with a 25.000 Legendary seal on it, as well as the Stars+, Slots+, EXP+ and Materials+ weapon skills. The Materials+ helps with getting gold materials, which you then can invest into a Rank III mixture, which helps you with getting those precious 4 and 4+ weapons. One run will score you around 250 K.O.s, so essentially you can grind around 100 levels with a Legendary seal, which got quite some of my characters from 100 to 200 in the process and also got them many, many good weapon drops.

Most people were suggesting the "Stop the enemy merger!" missions on the Koholint Map for grinding best possible weapons with highest rank, five stars and eight slots, but I had far more success with the above method. You will only get three weapons per run, but since you're also doing it for the levels and the fairy food, you won't mind as much, if you're not getting anything right away. But ultimately you will accumulate quite some good weapons - in fact this works so well that with some characters I've gotten a full collection of TEN best possible weapons. All highest rank, five stars and eight slots.

They key is using Focus Spirit, where it's much easier to unleash the 130 K.O. weapon bonus on a large group of enemies at once in the "Divisive plan" mission types. You also get the Experience and Material bonus. What's nice is that in these missions you can find lots of Magic Vial drops everywhere, so it's easy to pull this off and keep Magic up for a while. If you've already gotten the Magic Fountain Rental Skill, it will be much more convenient, but it's not necessary to have this for the same results.

For it to work you want to lure all dark character enemies to the same location. In the beginning you already have one dark enemy following you and another one nearby. You can make the other dark enemy nearby follow you by attacking him so that he splits once. This has to be only once, not twice, or else the dark enemies will stay in place. Doing so will also cause the third dark enemy to approach, but usually it works best to go to him with the others following you. As soon as everyone is in one place, you can unleash Focus Spirit and get to 130 K.O.s thanks to the many small enemies that get dragged along with the dark foes.

If you want to try this for yourself, you can find the four missions on the following squares of the Grand Travels Map:

  • Lvl5 on B06 - Tingle (Fire, Hot Spring Water)
  • Lvl6 on F01 - Toon Zelda (Darkness, Hot Spring Water)
  • Lvl7 on D11 - Medli (Darkness, Elixir Soup)
  • Lvl8 on D10 - Twili Midna (Light, Ordan Goat Cheese)

I wish that Medli would have been replaced by Ruto or made weak to the Lightning element, because the elemental weakness plays a big role in it. You can do this with any character and weapon, but only if you have the elemental advantage, the dark enemies will go down quick enough. So, use characters with Fire weapons on Tingle, characters with Darkness weapons on either Toon Zelda or Medli and characters with Light weapons on Twili Midna. Hopefully the Map in the upcoming A Link Between Worlds DLC will feature missions like these for the Water and Lightning elements (e.g. Volga and Ruto), so that characters with such weapons can have an easy time as well. But thanks to the 4+ dual element weapons most characters are covered by this anyway.

Volga just slayed twelve Tingles. And he feels good about it.

You want to do this on the Grand Travels Map (as opposed to similar missions on the Twilight and Master Wind Waker Maps), because of the double food drops. These are tied to the enemies, so you will always get the same food, silver or gold, sometimes even two gold. There is a limit of 255 pieces per food and you will hit this after a while, where it's time to take a pause and convert them into Gratitude Crystals. Those are not strictly necessary to unlock all skills on a fairy, but they are very helpful. Depending on the element of the fairy that you want to built, you are going to have to chose two other fairies of the same element and essentially keep replacing them with each other. Feed them with your accumulated food amounts (the element doesn't matter) to get them to Level 50 and then do the replacement in order to score a golden Gratitude Crystal of their element.

Right now I got a Fire Fairy (the one that looks like Din from the Great Sea Map) with all the important Rental Skills (Water Wall+, Magic Fountain, ...) and I'm waiting for the next update to complete her. I'm sure that Koei Tecmo will add more Rental Skills in the final update, probably even more rainbow color skills (maybe even Magic Fountain+ for double usage). So, it's best to wait for me right now and just simply collect many Gratitude Crystals in the meantime, where later I can use them to unlock all Rental Skills efficiently. And it's also possible that they might add a "Unlock all Rental Skills on one fairy" medal a with the last update, where building a complete fairy would then even count towards 100% completion. In any case, the food from the above "Divisive plan!" battles are mostly Fire type and one Darkness type, which is convenient if you're working with Fire or Darkness fairies.

Additionally you can get quite a lot of gold food from the Linebeck Trading Companies. After while you get into a cycle, where every nine battles a two-for-one sale will be happening and there's always exactly one Linebeck and one Songstone around. But still this gives you some additional free food, which might be useful for unlocking skills. (More about Rental Skills and My Fairy in a later post!)

There is other things you can't do yet before the final update. The level maximum will surely rise one last time to 255 and there are still multiple 4+ weapons left missing. I did get a best possible weapon for every weapon type, where the highest tiers are already available. But grinding weapons like the Hylian Sword, the Great Swords or the Crossbows will have to wait until the update.

Keep in mind that this process is rather slow and dull, so it's best to do this while watching a TV show or listening to a podcast in the background. Once you get the hang of it, the game doesn't need your full attention, except for when you're selling weapons, because you don't want to accidentally sell good ones or ones with skills that you still need. Actually a big part of the grinding time is spent within the Bazaar to buy mixtures and to sort through your weapons. Most of your Rupee income will be from weapon sales and this money can be put into leveling characters that you don't want to play or to built perfect weapons. Removing weapon skills is still ridiculously overpriced, but you will easily be able to afford it all thanks to constantly selling high-tier weapons.

That's it for now. We will talk more about Hyrule Warriors, as soon as the A Link Between Worlds Pack has been revealed.

Hyrule Warriors Legends: 6th SpotPass Gift

Yesterday another SpotPass Gift for Hyrule Warriors: Legends arrived on the Nintendo 3DS with Rupees and food:

  • 1,000,000 Rupees
  • 5x Golden/Delicious Pumpkin Soup
  • 5x Golden/Delicious Sacred Water
  • 5x Golden/Delicious Mushroom Spores
  • 5x Golden/Delicious Pumpkin

Thanks, Koei Tecmo! This is again a nice reminder that this game is still going, probably right in the middle between two DLC releases, where I'd expect the A Link Between Worlds Pack to hit late October / early November. I also would have expected the exclusive My Fairy costumes and Link's Classic costume to become available to everyone now, but we'll have to wait and see, how this will play out. It would be a shame, if you weren't able to get them at some point.

Anyway, besides some rounds of Super Smash Bros. 4 I almost exclusively played Hyrule Warriors: Legends this month. Right now I'm in the middle of a big grinding session, so I take, whatever I can get. One Million Rupees actually isn't that much late game, you can't even buy ten levels for a character above 99 with this, but I also wouldn't expect to receive more. And one of my goals is to create a fairy with all current available Rental Skills and the food will certainly help with that, even if also just a little bit.

Otherwise I've already completed all character badges a while ago and I'm focusing on leveling characters and farming best possible weapons + food for My Fairy, mostly on the new Grand Travels Map. Lorule Warriors Legends: A Link Between Worlds Pack Expectations

Hyrule Warriors Legends keeps us Zelda fans entertained during the 30th Anniversary of The Legend of Zelda with new DLC packs every two months. The final DLC is scheduled for late October / early November and will finally dive into one of the younger games of the franchise: A Link Between Worlds. Certainly a charming game, which offers lots of potential content for Hyrule Warriors! But what can we really expect from the last DLC? What will await us in detail? Let's speculate on Hyrule Blog!

Characters and their Weapons

The A Link Between Worlds Pack will feature two new characters and it already has been leaked here, who these two characters are. The same leak told us about Toon Zelda, so it's most likely accurate. But even without any leaks it should be clear that in the end it comes down to these three:

The Lorule trio of Ravio, Hilda and Yuga. It shouldn't surprise anyone that it's going to be two out of these three main characters of the game. And since both the roster menus on Nintendo 3DS and Wii U have space for three additional characters to make it an even 30, there is also the slight possibility that we're getting the complete Lorule trio at this point, where one character will be free DLC similar to Medli. That would be utterly amazing and we shouldn't expect this to happen, but in any case let us look at the potential movesets and weapons of all three Lorule superstars.

Hilda would continue the streak of playable princesses in this game and her weapon would be her Staff / Triforce Scepter. In A Link Between Worlds she summoned dark vines and Koei Tecmo would probably make good use of this for her fighting abilities. She might also take a page from Cia's book and summon Dark Ravios around her.

Yuga is probably the most interesting candidate here thanks to his Brush Wand. That should allow for some interesting moveset ideas, however, turning himself or others into paintings as a fully developed gameplay mechanic would probably be out of the question. But in the very least he could paint things that come to life, like the soldier enemies from A Link Between Worlds. He also could summon walls that come out of ground to turn himself into a painting for a move. And following his boss fights he probably will shoot energy attacks and create copies of himself, maybe even incorporate elements from Yuganon.

While Hilda and Yuga already hold their potential weapon types in their hands on the above artwork, it's not as obvious with Ravio. He does have lots of possibilities with his shop items, though, where an interesting approach would be that he uses the "Bracelet" as his weapon type and utilizes all the different items for different moves and combos in a more clumsy style. Alternatively Koei Tecmo could focus on one item, where the Tornado Rod would be the one that's unique and fit Ravio's clumsiness very well. And other items from the shop still could be part of the moveset, similar to how Toon Link uses the train with the Sand Wand. It's also very likely that both Sheerow and Ravio's big bag of Rupees will play a part in the moveset. So, expect a very colorful character.

Additionally for Ravio it would interesting, if he had a similar mechanic to Linkle or even Zanto, where he's taking the mask off. Or alternatively he could get a costume without the bunny mask similar to Cia.

The Adventure Map

The Grand Travels Map showed a new approach, where Koei Tecmo combined two worlds into one. And it's likely that the final Adventure Map will follow a similar dynamic, where we get both the classic Hyrule from A Link to the Past / A Link Between Worlds and Lorule in 8-Bit as one big 16 x 8 map. Let's call this the "Two Worlds Map".

You would start in Hyrule and then unlock portals via Bracelet item cards to enter the individual separate areas of Lorule, where you find the various "Final Battle!" missions. And all would be accompanied with a nice 8-Bit rendition of the classic Dark World theme.

As the item cards on this map they could use all nine items from Ravio's Shop for various purposes, e.g. using the Ice Rod to eliminate flame rings, which unlocks rewards. Collecting Maiamais as item cards would also be nice, which you then can use on Mother Maiamai for bonuses.

This might even tie in with this map's big bonus. The Twilight Map gives double material drops, the Termina Map gives double weapon drops, the Grand Travels gives more food drops and on the Koholint Map you can chose the perk that you want. Maybe on the "Two Worlds Map" the perk will be getting more Rupees, since A Link Between Worlds set a big focus on Hyrule's infamous currency with Ravio's Shop. Maybe the map in general gives you more Rupees, maybe you receive the boost with Mother Maiamai or maybe Mother Maiama even gives you an Experience boost in addition. There are many possibilities here.

It could also be that this Adventure Map will utilize "Hero Mode" for a final push of difficulty. Unlike the DLC Maps on the Wii U, the new Adventure Maps on the 3DS have been really nice so far, maybe even a little bit too nice. So, as a final challenge the map could become a lot harder, but potentially also use a mechanic, where you're able to make it easier with the use of Item Cards. Maybe even Mother Maiama could turn "Hero Mode" into "Nice Mode" for you, so you're collecting all the Maiamais for a good reason.

Costumes and other extras

What we've never gotten with any DLCs is new stages and it's very unlikely that this will change here. But it could be that we're getting a simple "Lorule Field" version of the typical Hyrule Field stage in the game. It would be the third alteration of this stage already, but it could turn out really nice with Lorule Castle in the background and a giant chasm instead of the river, maybe even a mirrored version of the original stage.

Anyhow, there are eleven 4+ weapons left and as usual there probably will 16 recolor costumes in total. Zelda already has a Hilda recolor from the Master Quest Map, but in case of Link I could see him getting a full Ravio recolor. It would be similar to the purple tunic from the Master Quest Map but with black hair and the striped scarf. Ganondorf could also get a Yuga recolor just to complete this trio in color costumes as well.

The sages also give additional material for recolor costumes, e.g. Darunia could get a Rosso recolor and Ruto an Oren recolor for obvious reasons. Naturally Impa would see the colors of her A Link Between Worlds counterpart and so might Zelda. Young Link could have a Gulley costume and Toon Link might get a Osfala recolor for the sole fact that he uses the Sand Rod now. A Sahasrahla recolor would be a nice fit for Daphnes. Lana and Cia could be Seres and Irene, because Seres has a book and Irene is a witch, who gets to fly Link around. And of course Tetra should have a thief girl recolor. The possibilities with A Link Between Worlds are amazing!

Fairy clothing could be equally fruitful. We already have a Hilda costume, but outfits based on Ravio, Irene or Seres are likely as well. Seres looks very close to one of the water fairies that we already have, the one on the Termina Map:

So, you could essentially recreate that character in My Fairy, which wouldn't be the first time.

Conclusion: Ravio, Hilda, Yuga, a Hyrule + Lorule Adventure Map, many interesting costumes... There's tons of potential with the A Link Between Worlds Pack and we can all look forward to it!
