Yesterday Nintendo has shared the good news on Twitter that Tears of the Kingdom has sold ten million units within its first three days! This is a new record for a Zelda game and absolutely fantastic.
Keep in mind that prior to Breath of the Wild no other Zelda game was even able to get past the ten million mark. Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess were the record holders with 7.6 and 8.85 million respectively. And Tears of the Kingdom has just surpassed those numbers on its first weekend...
It probably won't surpass those of Breath of the Wild with its over 30 million, given its nature of a sequel and its release very late in the life span of the Nintendo Switch. But there is a giant install base here, where for a lot of people Breath has become their favorite game, so this certainly helps. While there are also Zelda fans who didn't like the first big "open air" Zelda game, many of them will probably still buy the sequel in the hopes that they have been listened to...
With the massive success of Breath of the Wild and now Tears of the Kingdom you should not expect the series to return to the Ocarina of Time format any time soon, however. I could see it happening for a new top-down installment, but not for the major 3D titles in the future. The future of Zelda after Tears will be a big and very interesting topic in any case, but first let's play and enjoy the new game.
