Got the Mineru's Construct amiibo

This arrived on Thursday and has now completed the collection of amiibo for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. And with Mineru's Construct they have saved the best for last, because it's the largest and most impressive figurine in the set. It's not the heaviest, though, where this still goes to Yunobo.

Like the Guardian amiibo for Breath of the Wild, it comes with the gimmick that you can bend its arms and change them for all sorts of poses. Though, they are much sturdier and have all these plastic segments to them, so I'm hesitating with creative experiments. Anyway, here are some photos of how the things looks next to the previous amiibo:

 

Sage of Spirit Fabric

The Sage of Spirit Fabric is one that glows in the dark, but it's super subtle, because it's only for the third eye and quite small. But it's a nice, little detail, and overall I found this to be one of the best-looking paragliders, especially if you want something with a Zonai theme.

Well, this won't have any use for me now, unless I decide to replay the game. But I enjoy the ritual of returning to the game for new fabrics, where I wouldn't mind if the two upcoming Ocarina of Time amiibo will be supported as well. But this would require a new update for the game.

New LEGO: Ocarina of Time Link & Epona

Here is something from last Tuesday's Zelda Direct that I have yet to discuss: they have briefly announced a third The Legend of Zelda LEGO set – one for Link & Epona from Ocarina of Time. Unlike the other two sets, this is more of a small statue, which you can put on display, similar to all those LEGO flower bouquets or the Game Boy.

It's interesting that they have chosen this particular pose, because Link raising his sword while he sits on Epona is first and foremost reminding you of Twilight Princess, because that's the Zelda game that did it first. However, an original artwork for Ocarina of Time exists with a similar pose:

So, it was likely based on that, while also going more into the direction of that famous Twilight Princess moment on Eldin Bridge. But I suppose that they have preferred Ocarina of Time here for various reasons. It's the Zelda game that introduced Epona, it's getting a remake for the 40th Anniversary, and it's probably a better match for all that plastic, visually.

Still, it would be nice if the LEGO sets were to show more variety in the future when it comes to the representation of the Zelda series. If they are just going for Ocarina of Time and Breath of the Wild, because these are the two most popular Zelda game, it's going to get boring eventually.

Metroid Ravenous: Special Edition and amiibo

Oh, no, not again... It's already on the North American Nintendo Store, so this will likely follow tomorrow in Europe. And we're still dealing with waiting queues there!

Anywayyyyy... Metroid Ravenous will launch on Januar 28th with a Special Edition. And it's a special Special Edition, because it's really just the game (potentially with a clean cover), a steelbook, and an amiibo. Which is kind of odd. For the Wii U they had several of these bundles of games and an amiibo. Twilight Princess HD was one of them, remember? But I don't think we have seen anything like this for the Switch and Switch 2 generation yet.

amiibo can be hard enough to find enough as it is, so they don't really need to put them into a Special Edition to make things even rarer. There will be three amiibo for the game in total:

Samus, a Chozo Statue, and the Metroid Suit. The latter is totally rad, but that's the one you'll only get from the Special Edition. So, good luck with that. You'll need it.

We don't know yet what they will do in the game, but it will probably be something like an extra Energy Tank or more gallery images, while every Metroid amiibo before this will do nothing. 

Ocarina of Time Remake: Playing the Ocarina

In the gameplay footage Aonuma demonstrated how the ocarina is played in the Ocarina of Time remake. And... they have changed the buttons yet again from the Nintendo 3DS version. L and R seem to be the same notes, but A, X and Y have all been swapped. So, Zelda's Lullaby is now Y X A Y X A, instead of X A Y X A Y. As if the change in Ocarina of Time 3D wasn't already confusing enough, you now have to relearn all of the songs a third time.

But worry not... You can just hum the melodies into your Nintendo Switch 2 microphone now! No need to remember any buttons. Ain't that nice? Or... you can even play an instrument, like the official ocarina they are going to sell in the Nintendo Store.

Well, that could be fun, but it certainly won't be more convenient. At least you can also check your songbook via the ZL button, so this should make things easy enough. And to be honest, by now I have completely forgotten how the songs go in Ocarina of Time 3D, because it's been ten years since I have last played that version.

I was considering to replay the 3DS version before the remake comes out, but maybe I will refrain from that to not build some song muscle memories that won't be compatible.

Update: after sleeping a night on this, I came to realize that the new order is actually more intuitive, because it follows the alignment of the C-buttons from the Nintendo 64. So, the fault is with Ocarina of Time 3D here, because they already should have done it like this back then. Well, the idea was to go from left to right, from the lowest note to the highest, but this wasn't easy to learn when you've grown up with the Nintendo 64 songs.

40th Anniversary Direct Roundup

This was it, the first ever Zelda Direct, going for 30 minutes. You can watch the whole show on Youtube and you probably should, before you keep reading this blog... Though, there is not much to spoil here, really. In fact, even after yesterday's expectation management from Nintendo, I'm personally somewhat underwhelmed.

The beginning with the orchestra was very beautiful and certainly getting me in the mood, where I especially liked that they showed a clip of every single mainline Zelda games, all 21 of them. Now, they are bringing back the orchestra concerts all over the world, which is good news. The last ones have been over ten years ago and I'm looking forward to visit such an event again, given that there will be one in a city close enough. But we had this before with the 25th Anniversary, so this wasn't some mind-blowing reveal.

Then they just briefly talked about the movie, which surprised me probably the most, but not in a good way. I fully expected to see some casting news and a first real trailer, likely as the ending of the Direct, but we will have to wait a little longer. Of course, the movie will miss the 40th Anniversary, but I still think that the anniversary will mainly serve to hype both it and the Ocarina of Time remake. The only real news here was that it's just going to be called "The Legend of Zelda", which most had assumed anyway.

Don't care about the museum and café announcements. Maybe one day I will go to Japan, where this will be relevant, but I have no plans for that. And afterwards they've quickly skipped over some new merchandise, but most of it was just a bunch of collaborations with a variety of companies:

• a new LEGO set, another smaller one for Ocarina of Time 
• an electric Ocarina by Hori
• some Tears of the Kingdom figurines by Hasbro, called "Heroes of Hyrule"
• an electronic Master Sword by Hasbro
• A Hylian Shield statue by Huzzle
• The Legend of Zelda trading card collection by Panini 

The only two things from the Nintendo in this reel were the already announced Mineru amiibo and a playable Ocarina, which is going to be exclusive to the Nintendo Store.

Aonuma then took the time to play some Ocarina of Time. There have been lots of discussions about whether this is going to be a 1:1 remake or a re-imagining, but somehow it's neither. It's quite faithful, but they have changed and expanded the environments to a degree where they are almost unrecognizable at times. There will be also more character interactions, but for the most part it looks to be the same game, with the biggest change being that Link now can sprint and jump at any time.

The visuals, however, are certainly divisive. Some will love them, but to me this looks exactly like one of those ambitious Unreal Engine fan projects. It is impressive on first glance, but it lacks the soul that you would expect from a Nintendo game. It just doesn't have the same charm and some of the characters look awfully artificial. But more on that later on.

Something that probably no one saw coming is that the game will make use of the Zelda Notes app, just in a different way than Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. It will automatically take photographic evidence of all your Game Overs, because that's what everyone always wanted. There is also some Hyrule Guesser thingy (which would have been a lot more interesting with the open world games), as well as an actual quiz about the game, and a guide for playing your real life ocarina.

As already mentioned, they will release a physical ocarina, though they haven't given it a date yet. There will also be two new amiibo, for Young Link and Young Zelda, which do actually unlock new masks in the game. And we also finally got the official reveal of the 40th Anniversary Edition Nintendo Switch 2 and Pro Controller, which both got leaked a month ago.

This hardware gets released on October 29th, one week before Ocarina of Time on November 5th, which is similar to how they did with Tears of the Kingdom. This way you have one week to prepare your shiny new Zelda system for the game. Fortunately, Nintendo has abstained from also releasing a special Collector's Edition of Ocarina of Time, because our wallets will bleed enough as it is.

Finally, the Nintendo Direct ended with a first real trailer, which was really awesome and showed a lot new details, where I probably could spend the rest of the week analyzing it all if I had the time. But individual posts about all these topics will follow in the next days.

All in all, the 40th Anniversary feels like a lite version of the 25th – it's the same ideas without the fanfare of a new Zelda game. There is going to be another Ocarina of Time remake, we will get a new live orchestra tour, and you can buy some special edition hardware. Now all it needs is an Anniversary Edition of Four Swords Adventures, but maybe we will get that later in early 2027.

Got the Breath of the Wild Vinyl Collection (Limited Edition)

This item has arrived on Friday and now adds to the plentiful collection of different things to have all around The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It's the game's soundtrack, or at least a part of it, on vinyl, making this more of a high quality collectible.

If my girlfriend didn't have a small record player, I probably wouldn't have bothered with this, but I'm glad that I got this. It looks as pretty as it sounds. They made great use of the different official artworks for the slipcases and the sleeves. The discs are also wrapped in additional paper sleeves, which make use of various character artworks, like Mipha or the Bokoblin.

There are eight records in total (though, a cheaper 2LP variant also exists), covering the highlights, including the beloved Nintendo Switch Presentation Trailer music. See the Nintendo Store page for the full track list.

And while I'm not a big vinyl lover myself, I can hear the difference in sound quality, and there is a certain prestige about listening to music like this. It's much more active. You don't just turn on some fan-uploaded playlist on Youtube or the Nintendo Music app, while you go and do something else. You place these records into the player to really listen, while maybe enjoying a glass of wine. And Breath of the Wild certainly offers some tasteful ambience with its music.

Let's see if Nintendo will follow up on this. Actually, now that I'm thinking about this, a 40th Anniversary vinyl collection could be one of the things announced on Tuesday, featuring tracks from all over the Zelda series.

The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Leak

There have been quite some worries all around the internet whether Nintendo has forgotten / skipped the 40th Anniversary of Zelda, despite the fact that the 30th Anniversary wasn't initiated until September 2016 either. Well, if you have followed this blog, then you will know that there never have been any doubts, especially with the remake of Ocarina of Time coming later this year.

However, just like with this remake, things got leaked in advance, before Nintendo could give us an official announcement. There are photos floating around of upcoming merchandise, which includes a logo for the anniversary on the package. This looks to be 100% legit with several sources confirming this. Apparently, there already have been leaks last month about this topic, which somehow eluded me... But it all lines up. Don't read the rest of the article if you still want to be surprised.

LEGO: Ocarina of Time – The Final Battle Revealed

We knew that this was going to happen for a while, but this Friday Nintendo and LEGO have revealed their latest collaboration around The Legend of Zelda. This new set will focus exclusively on Ocarina of Time, depicting the game's final battle exactly as you would remember it – with Link leaping high through the air and Zelda shooting her laser pistol.

To be fair, I think the set is actually quite neat. Ganon looks impressive and you can change its pose like with an action figure. There are three custom mini-figures, where there is also one for Ganondorf, who you can hide under the rubble:

The price points looks to be even more expensive than the Deku Tree set, however. That one had 2500 pieces for 300€, while the new one offers 1003 pieces for 130€. There is probably some special stuff in there, like Ganon's blades, but I'm no expert on the matter and LEGO is generally known to be overpriced. In any case, I have yet to buy any of the LEGO stuff around Zelda and I'm not sure I ever will, mainly because I wouldn't know where to display it.

The animated trailer for this set had me thinking that they might also make a LEGO game based on the Zelda license in the future. There would even be lots of potential here if they were to explore the entire Zelda series, like they did with the newest LEGO Batman game, Legacy of the Dark Knight. It's not necessarily something I want, but I also wouldn't be opposed to it.

Mario Kart World Magnets

This is something that you could get from the My Nintendo Store as a Platinum Points reward, where there was also a set for the Knockout Tour. They cost 500 points each and I got them back in November, because we have the perfect fridge for this type of item:

And they look quite nice. When playing Mario Kart World as of late, I made it a small ceremony to add a magnet whenever I got three stars on Mirror Mode, meaning that I had fully completed the corresponding cup or rally. (It also gives you three stars in 50cc to 150cc.) If they add 200cc eventually, then I will do it all over again.

But when you have kids who like to play Mario Kart, then this might be nice to have as well for similar reasons. So, I can recommend these items, should they become available again.

Anyway, this also made me realize how the icons between the Grand Prix cups and the Knockout Tour rallies mirror each other thematically:

• Star ↔ Moon
• Green Shell ↔ Spiny Shell
• Banana ↔ Cherries
• Leaf ↔ Acorn

That's a cool detail. Makes you wonder whether they will replicate this in potential DLC or not care about this any longer. For example, they could do a Bell Cup and a Lucky Cat Rally. Or an Egg Cup and a Fruit Rally. And more importantly, will they also release magnets for those? 

Got the F4F Revali

The collection is finally complete! I have now received all of the First 4 Figures Champions as presents over the last couple of years, starting with Urbosa in 2023, followed by Mipha and Daruk last year. And as an early Christmas gift there is now Revali joining them.

Somehow my partner managed to hide this from me in our closet for the past six months, but since she had put Daruk in the same spot, I must have learned to turn a blind eye to it.

Well, normally you save the best for the last, but I would be lying if I said that Revali was my favorite of the Champions. The statue is still awesome, though. They have used an actual bowstring for the weapon, or at least a proper string, which is a fantastic detail. And to make Revali shine more, I got the light-up version:

My Mipha has this as well, but not the other two, so I will have to see how I make good use of this. And I still need to buy a proper display cabinet for them all, where there had been other priorities throughout the year. But at least I now won't have to leave an open space inside once it's in place.

Zelda Calendar 2026

It is that time of the year again, where your current wall calendar will soon have completed its service. And in the past Zelda fans could look forward to something new every year, but those days seem somewhat over...

The team at Danilo decided to make their Tears of the Kingdom calendars a trilogy, so it's more of the same. That means you get another 12 months of character artworks from the last 3D Zelda game, with some repeats and some new ones. Here is what's in it:

Link, Riju, Sidon, Tulin and Ganondorf are repeats from 2024. Zelda, Yunobo, Rauru and Hestu are repeats from 2025. And the Great Deku Tree, Purah and Mineru have their first occurrence.

Well, this could have been easily reduced to two calendars. Especially the current poster, which was last year's cover motive (and vice versa), seems rather uninteresting. And since there had been five repeats in the previous calendar already, two would have been enough to include all the artworks. Plus, they still haven't made use of everything there is yet, like Yunobo's default artwork.

At least the overall design has improved quite a bit, compared to last year. There is a lot more variance in the backgrounds and they have added the names of the characters, which looks good. I still like the one from 2024 the best, even though it has the simplest design of the three, but its simplicity made it the most stylish in my opinion.

Of course, the new calendar is very much still up-to-date with the releases that we had this year. Tears of the Kingdom got a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, new amiibo, and its own spin-off game with Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. A calendar based on the latter would have been amazing, though, but that probably wasn't as easy/cheap to realize, since it involves a third party. In addition, Mineru and Tulin will make their crossover debut in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, so there is some small relevance to 2026 as well.

Still, some love for Echoes of Wisdom would have been nice. This is where Abrams could have shined, but I'm pretty sure they have simply recycled stuff from their previous calendars, while getting some inspiration from Pyramid with their cover motives. So, I'd rather take the Tears of the Kingdom calendar for a third time, because this has at least something "fresh" in it.

Got Metroid Prime 4: Behind

A little late to the party... That's what you get when you pre-order from Nintendo directly. So far I've been an advocate of the My Nintendo Store, despite paying full prices, because you usually get a number of nice goodies, mint quality, and the game on time. However, they hate the idea of you getting the game a day early, so they always keep the deliveries very close to their chest. A little too close. And during the Christmas season, in the week after Black Friday no less, this backfired. My package was stuck in some delivery limbo, where nothing happened for 48 hours...

But I blame Nintendo here. They sent it too late without the necessary priority labels / fast shipping. So, I honestly can't recommend their shop any longer if you want to be playing on launch day. And yes, I could have just gone to some store and pick the game up there, but I wanted the additional goodies and this would have created some unnecessary back and forth. And after the mixed previews and reviews my excitement wasn't the greatest either, so I was able to wait two more days after having waited 18 years.

It only sucked that I had taken one day of vacation... But luckily I was able to move some hours around to have more time to play on Monday. I just hope they won't ever release a new Zelda game in December again, because I won't be as patient in that case.

Anyway, the My Nintendo Store sold the so called "Power Set" of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. It came with a big mouse pad, 61x35 cm, and a set of nine holographic cards. You also get a small key chain in a litte pouch with the game's logo on it, but that's the purchase bonus item that comes with any physical version of the game.

In addition, there are three amiibo: Samus, Samus on Vi-O-La, and Sylux. For some reason, the first two already were released alongside Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment a month ago, on November 6th, but I haven't touched them until today. At least they were delivered on time.

And they look really nice. Well, I personally find the normal Samus to be somewhat redundant, since we already got a very good looking version of that suit with Metroid: Samus Returns, but there is some extra detail with the purple psyschic power stuff and it has a different pose.

Their functionalities inside the game seem to be either useless or questionable, which is a problem with main Metroid games, it seems. Federation Force did it actually best with the paint jobs...

Now, I'm off to finally play the game. I'm not entirely sure if I want to do detailed blogging about my impressions and progress, now that I have effectively lost two days of potential play time, but let's see how I feel after the first couple of hours. It will be a shame if I don't, but in that case a late review will have to suffice.

Got Age of Imprisonment

This has arrived with the mail just now. I've ordered from the My Nintendo Store, where you get this neat, little notebook on top. It's nothing special, but better than nothing. But of course it costs full price to order it there, while the game was already considerably cheaper elsewhere.

With Age of Calamity I had actually imported the game from a different country in the EU, because I absolutely hated the German title, "Zeit der Verheerung". And it's not any better now with "Chronik der Versiegelung" (loosely translates to "Sealing Chronicle"), where I still don't understand why they felt the need to localize the subtitles of the Hyrule Warriors games. Nintendo never does this with any of their games, it's always all in English, and so far no one has complained about that... It's so weird. Also, the German age rating will ruin any good cover, which was also sometimes a reason to import certain games, but I find the Switch 2 boxes generally not all that appealing, so I probably won't care as much going forward.

But I was surprised to learn that the Switch 2 boxes are of the exact same sizes as the old ones. I expected them to be the same size as the Switch 2 itself (without Joy-Cons), simply because that's where the old size came from. But I'm not complaining, quite the opposite, because this makes them a much better fit into my current collection.

Naturally, I will do my usual blog about the game, so you can look forward to that in the upcoming days and weeks. I'm excited!

PS: I also got the first two Metroid Prime 4 amiibo. But I will show those on December 4th, once Sylux is available as well.

Breath of the Wild: Vinyl Soundtrack Announced

A vinyl record collection was announced today by Nintendo. Not by Nintendo Japan, mind you, but Nintendo of Europe and America, which is unusual. Well, according to Bill Trinen in an interview with Variety, this is an experiment, where they are gaging the interest in such physical soundtrack releases, while in Japan the CD has remained as a popular format.

They are probably underestimating the collector's value of these items, where I have imported some of the soundtracks from Japan, even though I rarely listen to CDs nowadays. And I know of other Zelda fans who have imported these as well. Records are much fancier, of course, where we actually have a record player at home, which we use every now and then, like for a fancy evening. So, I might be getting this.

Four different versions will be available... You can either go for a 2LP "best of" with 34 tracks, or an 8LP collection with 130 tracks. And each of these come in a standard edition with black records and a limited edition with colored records.

Update: the prices for this are quite heavy. It's 190€ or 195$ for the 8LP Limited Edition. And 60€ or 50$ for the 2LP Limited Edition. You can find full track listings in the My Nintendo Store:

Got the Tears of the Kingdom Sages amiibo

While the entire Nintendo community is busy with showing off their shiny, new Nintendo Switch 2s, my inner Nintendo simp will have to settle with what's probably the least interesting thing that came out today: the four amiibo of the Sages. Tulin, Yunobo, Sidon and Riju, all featured in their awakened form, now also get some well-deserved attention in the form of plastic figurines, equipped with NFC chips.

It's only fair after how they had to take the backseat to the Champions in Breath of the Wild (well, technically it was Teba in that game and not Tulin), but sadly they didn't get the same four-in-one pack. Or maybe this is a good thing, because some people might only want one of them, e.g. Sidon. And the prices are 33% higher this time around.

The figurines themselves are nice. They can't really compete with the Tears of the Kingdom Ganondorf from late 2023, but I do personally like them more than the Link and Zelda that we got in this series. Wielding the Champion weapons makes them look a lot more interesting already.

Riju and Tulin are quite filigreed, especially Riju, and they come with bent see-through stands to keep them in the air. Yunobo is very sturdy, not as heavy as Daruk used to be, but it still feels quite nice. And Sidon shines with his impressively detailed crown and collar.

They truly don't have to hide from their Champion counterparts, where they show more details here and there. For example, Sidon's Lightscale Trident actually shows those little, cyan pendulums beneath the top part. But they still go nicely next to each other, as you can see in the photos above.

What's not so nice are the new backsides for the amiibo boxes. They are now completely generic, only telling you that you can use amiibo with compatible software. And what software that might be is now up to you to find out... To be fair, with an amiibo from Tears of the Kingdom, you can make an educated guess, but it was still nice to read what it actually does within the game.

Well, it's curious that they were still featuring the Nintendo 3DS on the package back in 2023, where it's understandable that they don't want to show that any longer, or even things like saving your Mii on the amiibo. But they could have swapped all that for the Nintendo Switch 2 and generally put some more effort into this.

Of course, this isn't a deal breaker and most people may even throw the package away anyway. However, I always cut off the cardboard part to collect them for later reference and because the artworks look nice. And now there is a stylistic split between the first three Tears of the Kingdom amiibo and this group.

Still, I'm looking forward to the Mineru amiibo and to complete the collection. I have yet to scan them for their fabrics, where I haven't even seen them all, but I will do this later today or tomorrow and then make another post.

Got the F4F Daruk

This is what I got for Christmas, so I must have been a good boy. Mipha and Urbosa were already in my collection, where all of these have been presents from my partner, who is being quite generous here. But I already had a feeling when a big package arrived earlier this month and I was told to stay away from it...

Well, Daruk is certainly the most impressive of the bunch, who brings a nice weight with him and the largest weapon with his Boulder Breaker. It's the same as with his amiibo, only much larger, where the statue is roughly 29cm tall and the amiibo 9.5cm, so about three times the size. But the small Daruk could fit in big Daruk's fist.

Packaging was also much better than with the other two, because they used polystyrene foam to pad the backside and the plastic cover is simply put over the front. There is little risk of damaging anything this way and it's also much easier to put him back into his box.

I still need to keep them all in their boxes, because I didn't really have space for a big display cabinet in my old apartment. But these times are over and I will post pictures of all of them next to each other once I set everything up.

Zelda Calendar(s) 2025

The year is coming quickly to a close and it's high time to get some new calendars for your walls. If you want something Zelda-themed, you get to choose between two different companies again, which are Abrams and Danilo. I picked the latter, because their calendars are more easily available where I live and they are simply ahead of the competition.

Danilo's 2025 calendar is essentially a sequel to the one from this year. It's entirely focused on Tears of the Kingdom and uses exclusively the different characters arts for the game, but it's a different set for the next year:

You get Rauru, Yunobo, Teba, Hestu and the Captain Construct, which were all missing in 2024. And you also get the secondary artworks for Riju and Zelda this time, which is nice. However, the other five artworks are repeats, which is not so nice. Of course there aren't even that many character artworks to use, but there is still Yunobo's alternate art, as well as artworks for Purah and Mineru, which could have been included here. I didn't even know that some of these existed, like Hestu's for example.

At least the character variety is much better than it was this year. Only Zelda is seen twice and each of the sage descendants is featured exactly once. Ideally, they would have spread things out more, so that the 2024 calendar has no doubled characters except for maybe Link and then use the rest for 2025.

The overall design is fine. It's not the prettiest, but I appreciate that they were trying to do things differently for the same idea. The calendar by Abrams (not pictured) looks much cleaner with its backgrounds, but they are essentially just copying the competition from what they did last year, so they also are now doing a Tears of the Kingdom calendar with the character arts... At least they got the character variety right from the start, but this isn't the first time that they are just looking at the competition to make next year's calendar. This was also a thing when Pyramid was still around and it makes Abrams quite unappealing, because they always seem to be one year behind.
