The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Leak

The Legend of Zelda: 40th Anniversary (self-made logo)

There have been quite some worries all around the internet whether Nintendo has forgotten / skipped the 40th Anniversary of Zelda, despite the fact that the 30th Anniversary wasn't initiated until September 2016 either. Well, if you have followed this blog, then you will know that there never have been any doubts, especially with the remake of Ocarina of Time coming later this year.

However, just like with this remake, things got leaked in advance, before Nintendo could give us an official announcement. There are photos floating around of upcoming merchandise, which includes a logo for the anniversary on the package. This looks to be 100% legit with several sources confirming this. Apparently, there already have been leaks last month about this topic, which somehow eluded me... But it all lines up. Don't read the rest of the article if you still want to be surprised.

Without further ado, here are the photos:

folded box for a Nintendo Switch 2 special edition. the dock has golden triangles over its right half with the Triforce in the middle. the Joy-Cons are black and green with golden ornaments.photos of a special edition Switch 2 Pro Controller package. the right handle is green, the shoulder buttons are gold and there are a lot of golden decorations on the controller
another photo of the Pro Controller box with a better look at the 40th Anniversary logo: it's a green emblem with Link from the first Zelda game coming out of the Zerophoto of the backside of the pro controller packaging. it has a black to green gradient

And to quote myself from February:

We could also see a Pro Controller for the 40th Anniversary, or some Joy-Cons, or maybe even a whole Nintendo Switch 2.

Well, how about all of that? It's the full Tears of the Kingdom treatment, except that we didn't have to wait six years this time. And this doesn't seem to be connected to Ocarina of Time specifically, it's really for the 40th Anniversary alone, meaning that they are making a big deal out of it.

We will be getting a whole special edition for the Nintendo Switch 2 and the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller in a black, green and gold color scheme. This already beats the 30th Anniversary, where the triangle patterns feel reminiscent of that, but I'm sure that there will be even more, like a new line of amiibo figures.

There is also a logo for the 40th Anniversary, which is this green and gold banner, where the Pixel Link from the original The Legend of Zelda is stepping out of the Zero.

Anyway, I'm already putting these on my wishlist. The Pro Controller got a bit overdone for my taste, but the Switch 2 looks quite nice and both go along together. They are actually a better fit than the Tears of the Kingdom hardware, where the Pro Controller didn't really match the console.

There used to be a time where I was mad about this stuff (anyone remember the 25th Anniversary?), but when I got my Switch 2 last year, so I could play Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, I already knew in my heart that I will be trading it for a 40th Anniversary Edition one year later. And it's even understandable that they have been waiting for this event, especially with Ocarina of Time coming as well.

It's just a shame that this was leaked... again. Nintendo used to be so airtight in the past, but in the last years they have been really struggling with keeping things a secret. The same had happened with the Tears of the Kingdom Edition of the Nintendo Switch OLED, already at the end of 2022. The Ocarina of Time remake itself also got leaked. There are all these casting rumors around the Zelda movie and we know about a new Metroid game coming, which is reducing the number of surprises for the next Nintendo Direct. But I'm sure the Nintendo ninjas are already making their move to take someone's livelihood as a retaliation.
